Westfield State Claims MASCAC Women's Soccer Tournament Championship
Westfield State's senior defender, Katy Knight (Woburn, Mass.) netted the game-winning goal to give the Owls the 1-0 win over Worcester State in the 2015 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Tournament.
WORCESTER, Mass. – Westfield State's senior defender, Katy Knight (Woburn, Mass.) netted the game-winning goal to give the Owls the 1-0 win over Worcester State in the 2015 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Tournament.
For her efforts in the championship contest, Knight was named the MASCAC Tournament MVP.
Westfield improves to 10-6-3 on the season with the win and earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in the past eight years and first since 2012. Worcester State drops to 11-6-2 record on the season and awaits a possible bid into the ECAC Tournament.
The two teams were evenly matched throughout the course of the game with the Owls leading the first half in shots with seven and both squads only having one corner kick through the first 45 minutes of play.
In the 41st minute, Knight sailed a shot over Worcester State goalie Jillian Witkowski (Leicester, Mass.) to tally the first and only goal of the contest. The Owls outshot the Lancers in the second half 7-2 to secure the victory.
Westfield State's Stack registered the win for the Owls with two saves in first half play. Freshman Natalia Falcone (Sutton, Mass.) came in during the second half, only to face one shot on goal for a save. Witkowski tallied up four saves on the afternoon.
The Owls will find out Monday at 1 pm where they will be heading for the NCAA Tournament that begins this week with the first round.
