BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bears of Bridgewater State are the 2013 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Champions after winning the title game Sunday over Worcester State, 3-1.
Earning an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament, this is the third time the Bears (9-8-2) have made it to the tournament and the first time since 2003.
Both teams found themselves deadlocked to start the game with both teams collectively having eight shots during the first period. Senior Caley McClendon scored the first goal of the game. With 22 seconds left in the first half, Mackenzie Hatfield sent a cross to McClendon that she snuck by the goalie to put the Bears up going into halftime, 1-0.
Having momentum on their side going into the second period, Bridgewater State wasted no time putting another goal on the board. This time it was Erica Jonasson who nailed a header over the keeper to put the Bears up 2-0.
Adding another goal for insurance, Hatfield netted her ninth of the season on a quick pass from teammate Katie Nasuti which Hatfield drained into the back of the net to increase their advantage, 3-0.
Looking to make a comeback, the Lancers' Gaby Gonet scored on a free kick to bring the game back within reach, 3-1, but it wasn't enough and the Bears claimed the 2013 title.
Worcester State had the advantage in overall shots 12-7. Bridgewater State led the way with six cornerkicks.
Hatfield was named the tournament MVP after finishing the week with two goals and two assists for a total of six points.
The Bears await their tournament fate as the NCAA selection show will happen tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. and can be found at ncaa.com. First round games are scheduled to start November 15th and 16th.
