GORHAM, Maine -- Westfield State captured its fourth Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Indoor Track & Field title on Sunday evening, as the Owls posted a 36-point victory over runner-up and three-time defending champion Worcester State at the 2013 Championships that took place at Southern Maine’s Costello Athletic Fieldhouse Complex as part of the New England Alliance Championships.
Westfield State posted a team score of 228 points on the day to outdistance Worcester State’s total of 192 points, while Bridgewater State (84 points) and Fitchburg State (66 points) rounded out the team competition in third and fourth place, respectively. The Owls claimed their first title since 2009 in ending Worcester State’s run in the MASCAC indoor championships, which have been contested since 2007.
Seven different individuals captured conference titles on the day for Westfield State, led by junior Amy Auclair (Marlboro, Mass.), who broke her own record in the pole vault (3.20 meters/10-06.00) in repeating as champion in the event. Sophomore Targie Gervais (Springfield, Mass.) also set a new mark in taking the 55 meters (7.20) for the Owls, who also received respective titles from senior Rachael Cardin (Sutton, Mass.) and juniors Marie Gulino (Attleboro, Mass.) and Carolyn Connolly (North Weymouth, Mass.) in the 1,000 meters (3:07.43), 600 meters (1:39.04) and 800 meters (2:20.88). Sophomore Amy Trainque (Fitchburg, Mass.) and freshman Naloti Palma (Westboro, Mass.) were victorious in the 3,000 meters (10:47.06) and shot put (11.79 meters/38-08.25) for Westfield State, while the tandem of Cardin, junior Andrea Domings (Lexington, Mass.) and sophomores Jenn Holley (Ludlow, Mass.) and Victoria VanAlstine-Tauer (Littleton, Colo.) took top honors in the 4 X 800 meter relay for the Owls in a conference record time of 9:57.23.
Worcester State saw five different individuals claim conference crowns in the competition, led by senior Briana Wise (Worcester, Mass.), who repeated her title in the 200 meters (25.85), and junior Christy Deininger (North Attleboro, Mass.), who defended her title in the 55 meter hurdles (8.44). Sophomores Alexandria McMahon (East Longmeadow, Mass.), Cayla Leinonen (Spencer, Mass.) and Amanda Caldarone (Danvers, Mass.) also captured titles in the 400 meters (1:01.68), high jump (1.52 meters/4-11.75) and long jump (5.20 meters/17-00.75) for the Lancers, who also repeated as league champion in the 4 X 200 meter relay with a time of 1:46.41 completed by the tandem of Wise, senior Nicki Lemelin (Beverly, Mass.) and sophomores Liz Bodensieck (Raynham, Mass.) and Brittany Hodgerney (Leicester, Mass.). McMahon and Hodgerney were also part of a quartet that took top honors in the 4 X 400 meter relay (4:07.70) and included junior Megan Taylor (Danvers, Mass.) and sophomore Kim West (Harvard, Mass.).
Bridgewater State claimed the other four individual titles in the day’s competition, as senior Molly Rouillard (Dartmouth, Mass.) set a new league mark in the mile (5:08.42) and junior Melissa Chiasson (Maynard, Mass.) took the crown in the weight throw (15.03 meters/49-03.75). Freshmen Danielle Poto (North Andover, Mass.) and Ariele Krevosky (Oxford, Mass.) were also respective winners in the 5,000 meters (19:15.45) and triple jump (10.30 meters/33-09.50) for the Bears.
Westfield State finished third behind host Southern Maine and runner-up Keene State in the 2013 New England Alliance Championships, which combines competition between institutions from both the MASCAC and Little East Conference. The Huskies posted a team score of 138 points to slip past Keene’s Owls (135 points) for the title, with Westfield’s Owls notching 125 points in the Alliance scoring.
