Westfield State Claims 2011 MASCAC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship
Westfield State University captured its 13th Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Outdoor Track & Field championship in 14 years on Saturday afternoon at the 2011 conference championships that took place at Fitchburg State’s Elliot Athletic Complex in Fitchburg, Mass.

FITCHBURG, Mass. -- Westfield State University captured its 13th Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Outdoor Track & Field championship in 14 years on Saturday afternoon at the 2011 conference championships that took place at Fitchburg State’s Elliot Athletic Complex. The MASCAC Championship was once again part of the New England Alliance Championships, which brings together competitors from both the MASCAC and Little East Conference.
Westfield State posted a team score of 210.50 points to best defending champion Worcester State University’s total of 189.50 points. Bridgewater State University finished third with 123.50 points, while Fitchburg State University placed fourth with 86.50 points.
Freshman Targie Gervais (Springfield, Mass.) was a double winner for Westfield State on the day, as she set one of five new conference records in the 1000 meters with a time of 12.18 while also taking top honors in the 200 meters (25.43). Senior Amanda Gricus (Marion, Mass.) and sophomore Rachael Cardin (Sutton, Mass.) earned crowns in the hammer throw (48.06 meters) and 1,500 meters (4:57.40), while freshman Amy Auclair (Marlboro, Mass.) set a new league mark in the pole vault (3.05 meters) for the Owls.
Five different individuals claimed titles for Worcester State on the day, as junior Mara Kralian (Grafton, Mass.) and sophomore Erin Donohue (Saugus, Mass.) were victorious in the long jump (5.45 meters) and 5,000 meters (19:00.84), respectively, while freshmen Hannah Werneth (North Yarmouth, Maine), Ali Barrett (Hingham, Mass.) and Amanda Holden (Lunenburg, Mass.) were winners in the shot put (11.41 meters), 10,000 meters (42:47.88) and 100 meter hurdles (15.89) for the Lancers. Worcester State also set new conference records in claiming both relay titles, as the tandem of Kralian, junior Sarah Rafferty (Uxbridge, Mass.), sophomore Briana Wise (Worcester, Mass.) and freshman Christy Deininger (North Attleboro, Mass.) posted a time of 49.08 in the 4 x 100 meter relay while the quartet of sophomore Kaylee McElroy (Rutland, Mass.) and freshmen Kristen Wilson (Tewksbury, Mass.), Alison Hickey (Easton, Mass.) and Megan Taylor (Danvers, Mass.) posted a mark of 4:06.30 in the 4 x 400 relay.
Bridgewater State junior Sarah Lagasse (Rehoboth, Mass.) joined Westfield State’s Gervais as a double-event winner in the competition, as she took top honors for the Bears in both the 3,000 meter steeplechase (11:49.86) and 400 meter hurdles (1:06.99). Senior Jessica Eidinger (Sutton, Mass.) claimed the crown in the 800 meters (2:24.94) for Bridgewater State, which also received titles from junior Co Davis (Mansfield, Mass.) in the 400 meters (1:00.12) and freshman Melissa Chiasson (Maynard, Mass.) in the discus (32.85 meters).
Fitchburg State sophomore Shanissa Sampson (Marlboro, Mass.) set the other MASCAC record of the day in the javelin (38.69 meters), while junior Madeline Merchant (Gardner, Mass.) and sophomore Emily Lane (Clinton, Conn.) repeated as conference champions in the triple jump (11.10 meters) and high jump (1.55 meters), respectively.
Southern Maine captured its 12th straight New England Alliance crown during the day’s competition, as Worcester State (115.50) and Westfield State (111.50) finished in second and third place behind the Huskies. Bridgewater State was fifth in the Alliance standings with 71 points, while Fitchburg State finished in eighth place with 51.50 points.
