GORHAM, Maine -- Worcester State University captured its second straight Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Indoor Track & Field championship on Saturday afternoon at Southern Maine’s Costello Sports Complex Fieldhouse.
The Lancers posted a team score of 210 points to outdistance runner-up Westfield State’s team total of 152 points. Bridgewater State placed third overall with a team score of 117 points, while Fitchburg State finished fourth in the competition with 79 points.
Worcester State had four different individuals capture conference individual championships during the competition, as junior Mara Kralian (Grafton, Mass.) and freshmen Amanda Holden (Lunenburg, Mass.), Hannah Werneth (North Yarmouth, Maine) and Christy Deininger (North Attleboro, Mass.) took titles in the long jump (17-05.25), triple jump (34-09.50), shot put (39-04.00, a new conference record) and 55 meter high hurdles (8.92), respectively. The tandem of Kralian, junior Sarah Rafferty (Uxbridge, Mass.), sophomore Briana Wise (Worcester, Mass.) and freshman Heidi Bezemes-Turner (Beverly, Mass.) also set a league record by taking top honors in the 4 X 200 relay with a time of 1:47.75.
Westfield State freshman Targie Gervais (Springfield, Mass.) set a pair of MASCAC records in the 55 meters (7.36) and 200 meters (26.27), while senior Amanda Gricus (Marion, Mass.) and freshman Amy Auclair (Marlboro, Mass.) also took individual crowns for the Owls with conference record setting performances in the weight throw (55-09.00) and pole vault (10-00.050), respectively.
Bridgewater State juniors Molly Rouillard (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Sarah Lagasse (Rehoboth, Mass.) joined Gervais as double-winners on the day, as Rouillard also set a pair of conference records in the 400 meters (59.89) and 3,000 meters (10:48.51) and Lagasse claimed individual titles in the 800 meters (2:26.71) and mile (5:21.24), respectively. Senior Jessica Eidinger (Sutton, Mass.) and junior Colleen Davis (Mansfield, Mass.) also copped crowns for the Bears in the 1,000 meters (3:14.70) and 600 meters (1:40.71), respectively, as Davis’s mark was one of 11 meet records that fell on the day. Bridgewater State also posted a MASCAC record in the 4 X 400 relay, as the tandem of Rouillard, Davis, junior Carrie Robitaille (Ludlow, Mass.) and freshman Malgorzata Czerwonka (Billerica, Mass.) posted a time of 4:11.12, and the Bears also captured the 4 X 800 relay, as the quartet of Eidinger, Lagasse, junior Melissa Harris (Uxbridge, Mass.) and sophomore Megan Cullinane (Lunenburg, Mass.) posted a time of 10:25.51 in the event.
Fitchburg State sophomore Emily Lane (Clinton, Conn.) earned the Falcons’ lone individual league title in the high jump with a conference record mark of 5-04.25.
Worcester State finished third in the overall New England Alliance Championships that combines competition from both the MASCAC and Little East Conference, as Southern Maine earned its 11th straight title with 162 points to best runner-up Keene State (118 points) and the Lancers (109). Westfield State placed fourth in the final Alliance standings with 86 points, while Bridgewater State (64) and Fitchburg State (37.50) followed in fifth and eighth place, respectively.
