Worcester State Ends Westfield State's 12-Year Reign As MASCAC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Champions By Capturing Title At 2010 League Championships

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass.-- Worcester State College ended Westfield State’s 12-year reign as Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference Women’s Outdoor Track & Field champions by taking the title at the 2010 league championships on Saturday afternoon as part of the New England Alliance Championships held on the campus of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
The Lancers bested the Owls by nearly 75 points (215.5-141) to claim their first-ever MASCAC crown, as Fitchburg State followed in third place with 124.5 points while Bridgewater State (98 points), Salem State (31 points) and Massachusetts Maritime (4 points) were next in fourth, fifth and sixth place, respectively.
Five different individuals captured titles in their respective events on the day for Worcester State, as sophomores Mercedes Arnold (Mira Loma, Calif.) and Leah Walczak (Whitinsville, Mass.) took crowns in the long jump (5.61 meters) and 400 meters (59.77) while running legs in winning efforts in both the 4 X 100 and 4 X 400 relays. The freshmen trio of Kristen Brunelle (Dracut, Mass.), Erin Donohue (Saugus, Mass.) and Kaylee McElroy (Rutland, Mass.) also claimed titles for the Lancers in the shot put (10.94 meters), 10,000 meters (42:15.54) and 100 meter hurdles (16.52), respectively.
Senior Kerry Arouca (Hanson, Mass.) was a double winner on the day for Westfield State, taking titles in both the 3,000 meter steeplechase (10:53.05) and 1,500 meters (4:54.84), while junior Jenna Kydd (Chelmsford, Mass.) captured the league crown in the pole vault (2.52 meters) for the Owls.
Sophomore Madeline Merchant (Gardner, Mass.) was the lone triple winner in the competition, as she captured titles in the triple jump (11.15 meters), 100 meters (12.71) and 200 meters (26.20) for Fitchburg State. Five other Falcons also took individual honors in their respective events, as senior Lindsay Suprenant (Feeding Hills, Mass.), sophomore Katrina Marrone (Springfield, Mass.) and freshman Shanissa Sampson (Marlboro, Mass.) were winners in the discus (34.12 meters), 800 meters (2:24.80) and javelin (37.60 meters), while the tandem of junior Erin Abbott (Warwick, Mass.) and freshman Emily Lane (Clinton, Conn.) were co-champions in the high jump (1.54 meters).
Bridgewater State received a pair of individual league crowns from junior Brittany Page (Winthrop, Mass.) and sophomore Co Davis (Mansfield, Mass.) in the hammer throw (41.62 meters) and 400 meter hurdles (67.44), respectively, while Salem State junior Taylor Krajewski (Swansea, Mass.) claimed top honors in the 5,000 meters (19:59.94).
Worcester State finished as the runner-up to Southern Maine in the New England Alliance Championships that involves competition between institutions from the MASCAC and the Little East Conference.
