GORHAM, Maine -- Worcester State College captured its first-ever Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference Women's Indoor Track & Field Championship on Saturday afternoon at Southern Maine's Costello Sports Complex Fieldhouse.
The Lancers posted a team score of 190 points to dethrone three time defending league champion Westfield State's team total of 172 points, as Bridgewater State placed third overall with a team score of 92 points. Fitchburg State finished fourth in the competition with 67 points, while Salem State was fifth with a total of 17 points.
Sophomore Mercedes Arnold (Mira Loma, Calif.) and freshman Brianna Wise (Worcester, Mass.) each captured conference individual titles in two events to pace Worcester State to the team crown, as Arnold took top honors in both then long jump (5.38 meters) and triple jump (11.15 meters) while Wise captured first place in the 55 meters (7.44) and 200 meters (26.35). Sophomore Leah Walczak (Whitinsville, Mass.) and freshman Cathy Chude (Marlboro, Mass.) also took individual conference crowns for the Lancers in the 400 meters (1:00.47) and 55 meters (8.86), respectively.
Senior Kerry Arouca (Hanson, Mass.) and junior Rachel Ryan (Westboro, Mass.) captured two conference individual titles each on the day for Westfield State, as Arouca took top honors in the 1,000 meters (3:08.01) and mile run (5:11.18) and Ryan captured the top spots in the shot put (11.42 meters) and weight throw (14.07 meters). Junior Heather Perkins (Billerica, Mass.) took top honors in the pole vault (2.29 meters) for the Owls, who also received a conference championship performance in the 4 X 200 relay from the tandem of sophomores Laura Poore (Warwick, R.I.) and Kaitlyn Barth (Plainville, Mass.) as well as freshman Kelsey Ninteau (Salem, Conn.) and Mychal-Lynne Folsom (Rockland, Mass.) with a time of 1:54.58.
Bridgewater State received a pair of conference crowns from sophomore Sarah Lagasse (Rehoboth, Mass.) in the 800 meters (2:28.92) and 3,000 meters (11:12.92), while fellow sophomore Colleen Davis (Mansfield, Mass.) took top honors in the 600 meters (1:41.24). The Bears also triumphed in both the 4 X 400 and 4 X 800 relays, as the tandem of Davis, Lagasse, sophomore Carrie Robitaille (Ludlow, Mass.) and freshman Kylie Almeida (Somerset, Mass.) posted time of 4:16.24 in the 4 x 400 while the quartet of Robitaille and juniors Brittany Robinson (Gardner, Mass.), Jessica Eidinger (Sutton, Mass.) and Carissa Penney (Gardner, Mass.) posted a winning time of 10:22.73 in the 4 X 800. Fitchburg State freshman Emily Lane (Clinton, Conn.) rounded out the list of conference individual champions on the day, as she captured the title in the high jump with a mark of 1.58 meters.
Worcester State finished as the runner-up to host Southern Maine in the overall New England Alliance Championships that combines competition from both the MASCAC and the Little East Conference, as the Huskies earned their 10th consecutive title with a team score of 154 points to best the Lancers' total of 140 points. Westfield State placed third in the Alliance standings with 83 points, while Bridgewater State (48 points), Fitchburg State (39 points) and Salem State (2 points) followed in seventh, eighth and 11th places, respectively.
