GORHAM, Maine-- Westfield State College captured its third
straight Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference women's
indoor track and field title on Saturday afternoon by posting a
67-plus point victory over runner-up Worcester State at the 2009
league championships at the University of Southern Maine's Costello
Sports Complex Fieldhouse.
The Owls took top honors in eight individual events as well as two
of the three relays to post a team score of 234 points, while the
Lancers captured six individual events and the other relay for a
team score of 166.50 points. Bridgewater State edged out
Fitchburg State for third place in the team standings (50-49),
while Salem State finished fifth with a team score of 40.50.
Senior Marlee Berg (Chelmsford, Mass.) was a
winner in both the high jump (1.55 meters) and 400 meters (1:01:32)
for Westfield State, which also received a pair of triumphs from
junior Kerry Arouca (Hanson, Mass.) in the 1000
meters (3:09:34) and mile (5:14.44) as well as sophomore
Rachel Ryan (Westboro, Mass.) in the shot put
(9.91 meters) and weight throw (13.65 meters). Seniors
Kelsey Teal (Westford, Mass.) and Marianne
Mealey (Foxboro, Mass.) also captured conference
championships in the pole vault (2.44 meters) and 3000 meters
(11:01.03), respectively, while the Owls also took top honors in
both the 4 X 400 (4:33.94) and 4 X 800 relays (10:39.86),
respectively.
Sophomore Andrea Ouellette (Salisbury, Mass.) was
a double winner on the day for Worcester State, as she took home
titles in the triple jump (10.96 meters) and 55 meter high hurdles
(9.40), while junior Kara Antrim (Rowley, Mass.),
sophomore Rebecca Galipeau (Bellingham, Mass.) and
freshmen Maura Kralian (Grafton, Mass.) and
Maura Withington (Walpole, Mass.) captured
championships in the 600 meters (1:46.14), long jump (5.06 meters),
200 meters (26.92) and 800 meters (2:29.40), respectively, for the
Lancers. Worcester State also won the 4 X 200 relay in a time
of 1:50.20.
Salem State freshman Nicole Lemelin (Beverly,
Mass.) captured the other individual championship of the afternoon,
as she won the 55 meters in a time of 7.52 seconds for the
Vikings.
Westfield State finished as the runner-up to host Southern Maine in
the overall New England Alliance Championships that combines
competition from both the MASCAC and the Little East Conference, as
the Huskies posted a team score of 125 points to best the Owls'
total of 112 points and claim its ninth consecutive Alliance title.
Worcester State was fourth (101 points) in the Alliance
standings, while Salem State (22), Fitchburg State (14) and
Bridgewater State (9) placed eighth, ninth and 10th, respectively,
in Alliance competition.
