As we did with the fall sports, the conference still wants to recognize the great success of our winter student-athletes. Each week, the MASCAC will honor a champion from the 2019-20 championship season as MASCAC Players of the Week brought to you by GEICO.
Our 2019-20 MASCAC Women's Basketball All-Conference teams are this week's set of honorees.
For the second time in her collegiate career, senior guard Mary Kate O’Day of Framingham State has been named the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Year and heads up the 2019-20 All-Conference team which is voted on by the seven coaches around the conference.
O’Day, a senior from Berlin, Mass., led the Rams to a perfect 12-0 record and the school’s first outright MASCAC regular season title for the top seed in the tournament. O’Day finished the regular season in the top five of the conference in several categories, including points per game (18.4), total points (496), rebounds per game (8.6), total rebounds (232) free throw percentage (83.3), three point percentage (41.2) and field goal percentage (45.9) and assists (85). Her best game of the year came in the 101-91 win over Westfield State where she netted a double-double of 31 points and 10 rebounds along with five assists while shooting 53 percent (10-19) from the field.
Claiming the 2019-20 MASCAC Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Year is Flannery O’Connor of Framingham State. The freshman from Amesbury, Mass. averaged 13.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per game while leading the league in field goal percentage at 56.7 percent. She also collected 45 blocks, 32 assists and 20 steals in his her first year with the team. In the same win over Westfield State, O’Connor registered a career-high 30 points and 16 rebounds while shooting 65 percent from the floor.
For leading his team to their first outright MASCAC regular season title, 12-0 league record and number one seed in the tournament, Walter Paschal of Framingham State was named the 2019-20 Champion’s Choice Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year.
Joining O’Day on the All-Conference First Team are Emily Velozo of Framingham State, Melissa Gray and Chelsea Moussette of Westfield State and Mya Mosley of Worcester State.
Landing a spot on the Second Team All-Conference with O’Connor are Bridgewater State’s Destiny Fitzgerald, Fitchburg State’s Angelina Marazzi, Courtney Paschal of Salem State and Gigi LeMay of Worcester State.
