Westfield State Men, Women Look to Recapture MASCAC Outdoor Track and Field Titles
After claiming them on both the men's and women's side last season, the Westfield State Outdoor Track and Field squads look to recapture the MASCAC title on Saturday, April 25 at the MASCAC/New England Alliance Championships.
After claiming them on both the men's and women's side last season, the Westfield State Outdoor Track and Field squads look to recapture the MASCAC title on Saturday, April 25 at the MASCAC/New England Alliance Championships.
Hosted by Fitchburg State, the MASCAC schools which includes Bridgewater State, Fitchburg State, Massachusetts Maritime, Westfield State and Worcester State will compete along with six institutions from the Little East Conference as part of the New England Alliance. The meet will begin at 10 am with the discus on the field and 10,000 meters on the track.
During the 2014 outdoor meet, Westfield State claimed the crown with 219 points over runner-up Bridgewater State in second with 175 points. The Owls return Travon Godette and Steve Sam who were both top finishers in the MASCAC last season. Godette finished first in the javelin (203' 2"/61.94 meters) and high jump (6'4"/1.93 meters) while Sam finished first in the discus (148'6"/45.27 meters). Tevin Cintron and Michael Skelly finished first in the 800 meter run (1:57.89) and 1,500 meter run (4:03.99), respectively last season while the Owls also grabbed the top spot in the 4x800 meter relay (8:19.61).
Worcester State finished third with 150 points while Fitchburg State and Massachusetts Maritime rounded out the field in fourth and fifth, respectively with 82 and 20 points.
On the women's side, Westfield State looks to repeat as the top team in the MASCAC after earning the MASCAC title last year. Naloti Palma is back for the Owls after breaking the MASCAC and Alliance record in the shot put while also earning All-Conference honors in the discus throw with a top finish. The team also took home two relay crowns in both the 4x100 relay (50.60) and 4x800 relay (10:16.25).
Westfield State took home the crown with 224 points over second place finisher Worcester State with 192. Bridgewater State was next in third with 167 while Fitchburg State (48 points) and Massachusetts Maritime (1 point) rounded out the finishers.
