Bridgewater State Men and Westfield State Women Look to Repeat at Indoor Track and Field Championship
The Bridgewater State University men’s team and Westfield State women’s team look to repeat as champions Saturday, February 15th when the Bears and Owls will join two other league members in competing at the 2014 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.
WESTFIELD, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University men’s team and Westfield State women’s team look to repeat as champions Saturday, February 15th when the Bears and Owls will join two other league members in competing at the 2014 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.
The MASCAC institutions will compete in conjunction with the New England Alliance meet, which features participating schools from the Little East conference. The championships will be held at the Costello Sports Complex on the campus of Southern Maine University in Gorham, Maine beginning at 11:30 a.m.
Claiming their first ever indoor title last year, the Bridgewater State men’s squad looks to repeat after winning both the MASCAC and New England Alliance crowns in 2013. Returning for the Bears are juniors Brian Espinosa and Joshua Danner-Hicks. Espinosa claimed a pair of titles last year for Bridgewater State in the 200 meters then broke a conference record in the long jump. Danner-Hicks set a conference record in the triple jump on his way to a first place finish.
Bridgewater State finished with 195 points, taking the title from six-time defending champion Westfield State, who came in second with 170 points. Worcester State and Fitchburg State rounded out the MASCAC finishers with 164 and 51 points, respectively.
Collecting the New England Alliance Championship as well, the Bears were the first MASCAC school to earn the title since 2003. Bridgewater State finished 140 points over Southern Maine with 129.50 points.
On the women’s side, Westfield State looks to keep their winning ways alive after reclaiming the crown from Worcester State last season. The Owls posted a team score of 228 points with the Lancers coming in second with 192 points. Bridgewater State and Fitchburg State came in third and fourth with 84 and 66 points, respectively.
Returning for Westfield State is sophomore Naloti Palma. In last year’s meet, Palma finished first in both the MASCAC and New England Alliance in shot put. Junior Amy Auclair seeks her fourth straight MASCAC title in pole vault after breaking her own school record last year in the event.
The Owls placed third in the New England Alliance Championship with 125 points behind Southern Maine and runner-up Keene State.
