Fitchburg State Ends Westfield State's 13-Year Reign As MASCAC Men's Outdoor Track & Field Champions By Taking Team Title At 2010 Championships

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass.-- Fitchburg State College ended Westfield State’s 13-year reign as Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference Men’s Outdoor Track & Field champions by taking the title at the 2010 league championships on Saturday afternoon as part of the New England Alliance Championships held on the campus of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
The Falcons edged the Owls by one point (217-216) to claim their first MASCAC crown in 19 years, as Bridgewater State followed in third place with 81 points while Worcester State (64 points), Massachusetts Maritime (31 points) and Salem State (10 points) were next in fourth, fifth and sixth place, respectively.
Junior Matt Muolo (Stoneham, Mass.) and sophomore Chris Kibler (Bath, Maine) were double event winners on the day for Fitchburg State, as Muolo took top honors in the shot put (14.73 meters) and discus (47.54 meters) and Kibler was the MASCAC individual champion in both the 1,500 meters (3:58.83) and 5,000 meters (15:46.46).
Seniors Kyle Callahan (Stoneham, Mass.) and Devon Jennings (Boston, Mass.) added individual crowns in the 400 meter hurdles (56.85) and long jump (6.94 meters), respectively, for the Falcons, who also received titles from junior Matt Spano (Gardner, Mass.) in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:51.57) and sophomore Mike Iasevoli (Ayer, Mass.) in the 100 meters (11.27). Fitchburg State also claimed crowns in both the 4 X 100 and 4 X 400 relays in amassing its point total.
Senior Marc Gomes (Springfield, Mass.) was a double conference champion on the day for Westfield State, as he took titles in both the 200 meters (22.14) and 400 meters (49.32) for the Owls, who also received individual league crowns from senior Tyler Merchant (Gardner, Mass.) in the javelin (57.34 meters) as well as freshmen Brendan Corcoran (Walpole, Mass.) and Tom Gauger (Billerica, Mass.) in the 800 meters (1:58.13) and pole vault (3.89 meters), respectively.
Both Bridgewater State and Massachusetts Maritime each had two individual champions in the competition, as senior Kevin White (Swansea, Mass.) and sophomore Jeff Sousa (North Dighton, Mass.) captured top honors for the Bears in the 110 meter hurdles (15.49) and 10,000 meters (34:51.63), while junior Rory O’Donnell (Somerset, Mass.) and sophomore Chris Sullo (Canton, Mass.) took titles in the triple jump (13.73 meters) and high jump (1.86 meters) for the Buccaneers.
Worcester State senior Jim Macera (Paxton, Mass.) captured the lone individual title of the day for the Lancers, taking the hammer throw with a mark of 48.20 meters.
Fitchburg State finished as the runner-up to Southern Maine in the New England Alliance Championships that involves competition between institutions from the MASCAC and the Little East Conference.
