FRAMINGHAM & WORCESTER, Mass. -- The top-seeded Worcester State Lancers will play host to the third-seeded Bridgewater State Bears on Sunday, November 10 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Championship after winning their respective semifinal games on Friday.
Getting the day started, Bridgewater State matched up with second-seeded Framingham State. The Bears had several chances early in the box, but Rams' goalie William Levitsky was able to keep them at bay.
In the 21st minute, Bridgewater State's Conor Murtagh drained the first and only goal of the game on a cross from teammate Justin Kachadoorian to give the Bears a 1-0 lead that would hold up to win the contest.
Senior Matt Bagley completed his eighth shutout of the season for the Bears while Levitsky tallied seven saves on the day.
Playing for the final spot in the title game were top-seeded Worcester State who hosted fourth-seeded Massachusetts Maritime. Both teams were getting good looks early on with the Buccaneers looking to strike first on a rocket by Connor McInnis that sailed just over the crossbar.
It wasn't until the 44th minute that either team got on the board. Derek Alves capitalized on a beautiful pass to put the Lancers up 1-0.
At the beginning of the second period, Massachusetts Maritime looked ready to even it up, getting great looks and some close calls, but Worcester State's keeper Nick Zucco was able to stop them to keep his team in the lead.
Adding to their advantage, Alex Wolfel took a pass from teammate Brian Cormier in for the score to put the Lancers up 2-0 which would be the final.
This will be the sixth appearance in the championship game for Worcester State while it is the fifth for Bridgewater State. Earlier this season, the two squads played to a 1-1 tie. The game on Sunday at Worcester State is set to begin at 1 p.m.
