BREWSTER, Mass. -- Senior golfer Ethan Doyle received the 2024 Guy Tedesco Award when it was presented on Saturday by the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association as part of the (NEIGA) Championship held at the Captains Golf Course in Brewster, Mass.
Doyle is the fourth Viking to receive the award and is the first since Jeff Santora won the honor in 2009. Doyle has helped lead Salem State to three Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Championships and three NCAA Tournaments in his four years and was the MASCAC Rookie and Player of the Year in 2021.
The Guy Tedesco Award is given to the New England golfer from either Division 1, 2 or 3 who excels on the course and in the classroom. It is awarded to someone who shows leadership, sportsmanship and promotes the game. This award is given annually to the outstanding New England college golfer who displayed the qualities Guy Tedesco was noted for: unselfish leadership, outstanding talent, love of golf and willingness to promote positive aspects of golf to others.
Additionally, former two-time All-American and Salem State Hall of Fame inductee Thomas Tobey '89 received the 2024 George A. Jacobson Special Recognition Award from the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association for his contributions to New England collegiate golf. The award is named in honor of former Salem State Hall of Fame golf coach and Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Hall of Fame member George "Jake" Jacobson.
Said Doyle, "Winning this award is an honor. Words can't explain how grateful I am to receive the Guy Tedesco award. Playing for Salem State the past four years has made me a better golfer and person. On the course and in the classroom, I focus on getting better every day and for that hard work to pay off is something really special."
Current golf coach Jimmy O'Reilly talked about the attributes that Ethan possess that sets him apart from his peers. "When your star player is one of your most coachable, your program will be successful. Ethan is a leader in everything he does. It's truly like having another coach on staff. He speaks and people listen and don't flinch; they are locked in on what he has to say. He leads by example by how he carries himself. He practices with passion and intensity because he loves golf, and he thrives off the competition."
"His attention to detail and his mental preparation week in and week out is off the charts and is one of the main reasons why he is so successful. Mentally he is as tough as any player I have ever coached. In the classroom he is a star and when you have both of those things figured out at the same time, you have a star like Ethan. Ethan can stand shoulder to shoulder with the very best teams and players to ever play at Salem State."
