Four MASCAC student-athletes have earned ECAC player of the week honors, the conference announced yesterday.
WESTFIELD, Mass.-- Four Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference athletes have earned the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) player of the week honors, the conference announced Tuesday.
Adam Straughn of Worcester State and Bobby Rosano of Massachusetts Maritime earned Division III-North East Defensive and Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively. The duo earned the MASCAC weekly awards in their respective categories as well.
Straughn was instrumental in helping the Lancers to a 2-0 start to the season. In the game Saturday against WPI, the senior linebacker finished with a game-high 12 tackles (10 solo), fumble recovery and blocked extra point attempt in the third quarter for a 15-14 comeback win.
Helping lead the comeback for the Buccaneers, Rosano averaged 38.8 yards on four kickoff returns (155 total yards), including 86-yard return for late third quarter touchdown, that sparked their comeback from 10-point deficit in 24-20 Chowder Bowl victory over SUNY-Maritime. The junior running back amassed 194 total all-purpose yards, including five receptions for 39 yards, for the contest.
After being named the MASCAC Player of the Week in women's soccer, Katie Levesque of Massachusetts Maritime was named the ECAC Division III New England Co-Defensive Player of the Week.
The sophomore from Wilhoit, N.H. stopped 23 of 24 shots in recording 0.41 GAA and .958 saves percentage in a pair of road draws for the Buccaneers, who are off to best start in program’s six-year history (1-1-2). Recorded 19 saves in 1-1 tie at Regis (in which team was outshot overall by 41-3 margin) and four stops as part of second shutout of season in scoreless tie at Anna Maria.
Rounding out the honorees, Olivia Galvin of Bridgewater State was named the ECAC Division III New England Defensive Player of the Week for field hockey. She also earned the accolade in the Little East conference.
Galvin anchored a Bears unit that held its opponents scoreless in two matches this past week. The senior from Mashpee, Mass. and her teammates posted shutout victories over Salve Regina and Southern Maine. The squad limited the Huskies to just three shots on net to become the first squad to shutout Southern Maine this season.
