Worcester State senior quarterback Tony Tokarz (Holden, MA/Wachusett) has been selected as this week’s NEFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in a 31-30 triumph over Coast Guard on Saturday.
Tokarz threw for a career-best 298 passing yards with four scores as he went over the 4,000 yard mark in his career and tied himself with Pat Good (2005-08) for third place on the all-time touchdown list. His 49-yard scoring strike early on in the fourth quarter to sophomore AJ Scerra (Marlboro, MA) proved to be the difference in their win over the Bears.
Tokarz is currently second in the NEFC in passing yardage (1,346) and total offensive yardage (1,596) while he is also third in average passing (162.2 YPG), total offense per game (199.2 YPG) and pass efficiency (136.1). With 19 touchdowns this season, Tokarz is only one off of conference leader Phil Konopka of Endicott.
In 28 career games Tokarz has been a consistent threat for opposing teams with both his arm and his legs. Tokarz has 4,128 passing yards and 41 touchdowns through the air and 1,034 yards for 12 scores on the ground. His passing yardage is good for the fourth-highest total in the record book as he is in 10th place and just 48 yards away from the next spot on the all-time rushing list.
Tokarz is the all-time leading rusher for a signal caller in Worcester State history.
With just two game remaining, the Lancers (6-2, 4-2 NEFC Bogan) head to Fitchburg State for a 1:30 matchup this Saturday. WSU needs Framingham State to lose to Coast Guard on Saturday if they want to have a chance at claiming the title in the final week of the season against the Rams at home on November 5.
In defeating the Bears this past weekend, the Blue and Gold are assured their first winning season since the 2004 season.
