Salem, Mass. – Salem State baseball player Steve Buitkus (Reading, Mass.) ended his playing career for the Vikings this past spring, but the senior earned one final award to culminate his accomplishments, as he earned the 2013 McNally-Allard-McDonough Sportsmanship Award, which is presented annually by the Collegiate Baseball Umpires Association of New England.
The McNally-Allard-McDonough Sportsmanship Award, which is named after two distinguished former umpires, Whitey Allard and Marty McDonough, is given to the player or coach who most exemplifies the ideals of sportsmanship while demonstrating respect for umpires, opponents, and the game of baseball. Dozens of players, ranging from Division I, II and III were nominated for the award.
Head coach Mike Ward proudly presented his captain with the award at the College Baseball Umpires Association of New England Banquet this past weekend.
"I think that this is nice recognition and a special award for Steve, and is a great way to wrap up his collegiate playing career," Ward Said. "Steve was a real leader and captain of our team, and he put forth maximum effort both in games and practices. Not only did he have talent and was able to win the league MVP, he played the game the right way. I am glad that the umpires association recognized Steve for his attitude and efforts. I am also glad that Steve is now a member of our baseball coaching staff."
The reigning Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year led Salem State to its first MASCAC regular season championship since 2006, including an NCAA Tournament appearance, after helping the Vikings achieve a 22-13 regular season record.
