Westfield State Seeks Repeat Titles at 2024 MASCAC Men's and Women's Cross Country Championship
After sweeping the team titles last season, the Westfield State men and women look to repeat the 2024 MASCAC Cross Country Championship on Saturday, November 2 at the Doyle Conservation Area in Leominster, Mass.
After sweeping the team titles last season, the Westfield State men and women look to repeat the 2024 MASCAC Cross Country Championship on Saturday, November 2 at the Doyle Conservation Area in Leominster, Mass.
Hosted by Fitchburg State, the meet features teams from Bridgewater State, Fitchburg State, Framingham State, MCLA, Mass. Maritime, Westfield State and Worcester State. The women get the day started at 11 am with the 5k with the men following at noon with an 8k race. After both races, awards will be given to the top two teams in each gender, the top overall individual runner and rookie for men and women along with the top 10 finishers on each side.
At the 2023 championship, the Owls collected 26 points to take home their first men's crown since 2016 while Bridgewater State came in second place with 47 points. Fitchburg State landed in third with 66 points, Framingham State in fourth with 132 and Mass. Maritime in fifth with 135. Rounding out the team standings were Worcester State and MCLA in sixth and seventh with 146 and 205 points, respectively.
Nathan Sylven of Westfield State took home individual champion and Rookie of the Year accolades after crossing the line first with an 8k time of 26:19.
During the women's championship, the Owls finished with 34 points while second place Bridgewater State was close behind with 42 points. Framingham State had 72 points for third place and Fitchburg State in fourth with 131. Mass. Maritime came in fifth with 142 points while Worcester State MCLA closed out the team standings in sixth and seventh with 160 and 179 points, respectively.
For Bridgewater State, Naomi Cass was the first finisher across the line to earn 2023 MASCAC Women's Cross Country Individual Champion with a time of 19:10.
Kate Buban of Framingham State was named the 2023 MASCAC Rookie of the Year after she was the top first time performer in eighth place with a time of 20:46.
