Westfield State Women, Worcester State Men Look for Back-To-Back Titles at 2022 MASCAC Cross Country Championships
After winning their respective titles last season, the Westfield State women's and Worcester State men's cross country teams will look to win back-to-back titles at the 2022 MASCAC Cross Country Championships on Saturday, October 29 hosted by Westfield State.
After winning their respective titles last season, the Westfield State women's and Worcester State men's cross country teams will look to win back-to-back titles at the 2022 MASCAC Cross Country Championships on Saturday, October 29 hosted by Westfield State.
This year's championship will be held at Stanley Park in Westfield, Mass. The women's 5k will go off first at 11 am with the men's 8k following at 12 pm. After both races, awards will be given to the top two teams in each gender, the top overall individual runner and rookie for men and women along with the top 10 finishers on each side.
During the 2021 women's race, Westfield State finished with 37 points while Bridgewater State came in second with 52 points. Landing is third was Worcester State with 87 with Fitchburg State in fourth with 98 points and Framingham State also with 98 points for fifth. Mass. Maritime closed out the standings in sixth place with 141 points.
For the team champion Owls, Amy O'Sullivan earned MASCAC Runner of the Year honors after crossing the line with a time of 18:46 over the 5k course. Her time was a minute and a half faster than her next competitor. Along with O'Sullivan teammates Mia McDonald and Kerin Johnson claimed All-Conference honors. McDonald had a time of 20:40 for fourth place. Johnson was right behind in fifth with a time of 20:50 to earn MASCAC Rookie of the Year accolades.
On the men's side, Worcester State finished first with 49 points with Fitchburg State not far behind in second with 53. This was the Lancers first men's cross country crown in league history. Bridgewater State was next in third with 71 points while Westfield State finished fourth with 78 points. Framingham State was fifth with 101 points while Mass. Maritime and MCLA rounded out the field in sixth and seventh, respectively with 184 and 212 points.
Taban Manyok of Fitchburg State crossed the line first with an 8k time of 26:08 to not only be named MASCAC Runner of the Year but also Rookie of the Year.
