WESTFIELD, Mass. -- After the completion of the fall regular season, Bridgewater State has the most points in the first round of the Howard C. Smith Cup standings. The Smith Cup is awarded annually to the member institution which compiles the most points based on the placement of each of its programs competing in the 15 league championship sports.

 

The Smith Cup is named in honor of former Massachusetts State College Trustee Howard C. Smith, who in 1970, urged the athletic directors of the eight State institutions to hold a series of meetings to discuss the possibility of forming an intercollegiate conference. In June of 1971, Smith’s dream became a reality as an affirmative agreement was reached and the MASCAC was created.

 

Bridgewater State sits in the top spot with 59.50 points (78.29 percent) out of 76 possible points. The Bears finished atop the regular season standings in field hockey while finishing second in men’s cross country, football, men’s soccer and women’s soccer. 

 

Up next in second with 56 points (73.68 percent) out of 76 possible points is Worcester State. The Lancers were first in women’s cross country, women’s soccer and volleyball while coming in second in field hockey and fourth in men’s cross country, football and men’s soccer.

 

Sitting in third is Westfield State with 47 points (61.84 percent) out of 76 possible points. The Owls were second in women’s cross country, tied for second in volleyball and third in men’s cross country, football and women’s soccer. Framingham State is in the fourth spot with 46.50 points (61.18 percent) out of 76 possible points. The Rams ended the year first in the football and men’s soccer standings while placing fourth in women’s cross country and tying for fourth in volleyball.

 

Grabbing the fifth slot is Salem State with 24 points (50 percent) out of 48 available points. The Vikings were tied for second in volleyball, third in men’s soccer, fifth in women’s soccer and sixth in field hockey. Fitchburg State earned 30 points (39.47 percent) out of 76 possible points for sixth place. The Falcons finished atop the men’s cross country standings, third in field hockey and tied for fourth in football.

 

Rounding out the fall standings are Massachusetts Maritime and MCLA in seventh and eighth, respectively. The Buccaneers collected 16 points (25 percent) out of 64 possible points. The team finished tied for fourth in football, fifth in women’s cross country and sixth in men’s cross country. The Trailblazers netted 10 points (19.23 percent) out of 52 possible points and finished sixth in volleyball and seventh in men’s cross country, women’s cross country and women’s soccer.
