Members of the Massachusetts Maritime Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Student Government Association, Regimental staff and Academy administration gathered together on Friday afternoon for a check presentation to former Fresno State and Boston Celtics standout Chris Herren and his foundation, The Herren Project, inside the Clean Harbors Athletic Center.
The Herren Project and The Project Purple Initiative received a check in the amount of $4,634.00 that was raised by the Massachusetts Maritime community in early April as part of a campus-wide Dress Down Day in celebration of NCAA Division III Week. Cadets and staff were encouraged to wear purple clothing during the April event in support of THP and Project Purple, and the Buccaneer SAAC raised additional funds and awareness of the foundation’s on-going work throughout Division III Week.
Herren, who was joined by THP Marketing & Communications Director Jenny Swider at Friday’s ceremony, was launched in 2012. THP Project Purple is a national anti-substance abuse initiative of The Herren Project launched to break the stigma of addiction, bring awareness to the dangers of substance abuse and shed light on effective treatment practices. The THP Project Purple initiative encourages people of all ages to “Go Purple” and stand up to substance abuse. Herren spoke to the Academy community about his story in October 2014, and during that visit the Buccaneer SAAC teamed up with The Herren Project to assist in its on-going mission.
Additionally, the Buccaneer baseball and softball teams sported custom made purple hats and visors on April 10th during their respective home doubleheaders with Worcester State in support of The Herren Project, following in the footsteps of similar initiatives done in recent years by the reigning world champion Kansas City Royals and the Virginia Tech baseball program. Members of the Buccaneer SAAC presented Herren and Swider with a custom made purple hat and visor that displayed Massachusetts Maritime’s signature athletic “M” in gold.
Joining the cadets at today’s event were Academy Vice President for Student Services and Commandant of Cadets Captain Ed Rozak, Director of Athletics Garin Veris, Head Men’s Soccer Coach Greg Perry and Equipment Manager Kevin Conrad.
