Worcester State Wins First MASCAC Men's Cross Country Championship
After a rain soaked race, Worcester State claimed their first-ever MASCAC Men's Cross Country Team Championship at Willard Park in Devens, Mass. on Saturday.
After a rain soaked race, Worcester State claimed their first-ever MASCAC Men's Cross Country Team Championship at Willard Park in Devens, Mass. on Saturday.
Worcester State finished first with 49 points with Fitchburg State not far behind in second with 53. Bridgewater State was next in third with 71 points while Westfield State finished fourth with 78 points. Framingham State was fifth with 101 points while Mass. Maritime and MCLA rounded out the field in sixth and seventh, respectively with 184 and 212 points.
Taban Manyok of Fitchburg State crossed the line first with an 8k time of 26:08 to not only be named MASCAC Runner of the Year but also Rookie of the Year. Joining Manyok on the All-Conference team was teammate Brian O'Sullivan with a time of 27:45 for seventh.
Team Champion Worcester State finished with three student-athletes in the top 10. Patrick Carleton was the top Lancer across the line in second with a time of 26:11. Right behind him in third was Drew Fottler with a time of 26:25 for third place. Wayne Carey came in sixth in a time of 27:30 to join Carleton and Fottler as an All-Conference honoree.
Kevin McBirney of Bridgewater State was the fourth overall runner across the line with an 8k time of 26:33. Samuel Steere saw him earn a ninth place finish with a time of 28:02 with the duo grabbing on a spot on the All-Conference team.
For Westfield State, the duo of Will Buckley and Mike Mahar were in the top 10 of the results to earn All-Conference accolades. Buckley came in fifth with a time of 27:19 while Mahar was 10th with a time of 28:04.
Patrick Walsh of Framingham State rounded out this year's All-Conference team. Walsh finished in eighth place with a time of 27:56.
Jim Jellison of Fitchburg State was named the Champion's Choice Coach of the Year.
The cross country teams will have a week off before heading to Boston for the DIII New England Regionals hosted by Suffolk University.
