Bridgewater State Men, Westfield State Women Seek Repeat at 2021 MASCAC Cross Country Championship
After COVID cancelled the 2020 fall championship season, the Bridgewater State men and Westfield State women look to claim the title as they did in 2019 at the 2021 MASCAC Cross Country Championship on Saturday, October 30.
After COVID cancelled the 2020 fall championship season, the Bridgewater State men and Westfield State women look to claim the title as they did in 2019 at the 2021 MASCAC Cross Country Championship on Saturday, October 30.
Hosted by Fitchburg State, this year's championship will be held at Willard Park in Devens, Mass. The men's 8k will go off first at 11 am with the women's 5k following at 12 pm. After both races, awards will be given to the top two teams in each gender, the top overall individual runner and rookie for men and women along with the top 10 finishers on each side.
In 2019, the Bears finished first with 37 points while Westfield State edged out Worcester State for second place with 60 points to the Lancers 61. Fitchburg State was next in fourth with 73 while Framingham State and Massachusetts Maritime rounded out the teams in fifth and sixth with 134 and 189 points, respectively.
Trevor Wysong led the way for Bridgewater State as the top individual finisher with an 8k time of 25:56, almost two minutes faster than the next competitor to earn 2019 MASCAC Men's Cross Country Runner of the Year honors.
For Westfield State, Jack Merck was the team's top finisher in ninth place with an 8k time of 28:03 which earned him not only All-Conference accolades but also the 2019 MASCAC Rookie of the Year, as the top overall first time performer.
For the women in 2019, the Owls finished first with 34 points while Bridgewater State was second with 51 points. Up next in third was Worcester State with 64 while Framingham State came in fifth with 113. Fitchburg State and Massachusetts Maritime rounded out the field in fifth and sixth with 115 and 176 points, respectively.
Leading the way for Westfield State was Grace Phair who not only was the top overall finisher to earn 2019 MASCAC Runner of the Year honors but was also the top first time performer for Rookie of the Year accolades. She finished the 5k course in a time of 19:10.
