Plymouth State senior Myles Abbate has been named American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) First Team All-American and the winner of the 22nd Joe Concannon Award, presented annually to the best American-born college hockey player in New England at the Division II/III level by the Gridiron Club of Great Boston.
Abbate was named a CCM/AHCA Men's Division II-III East First Team All-American. Last winter he became the program's first All-American with a third team selection. The Joe Concannon Award was established in 2001 shortly after the passing of the longtime writer for The Boston Globe, who had a great passion for the game of college hockey while always advocating strongly for amateur athletics.
The 5-10 forward is quickly running out of room on his trophy shelf. Abbate earned Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Rookie of the Year honors following the 2019-20 season and claimed MASCAC Player of the Year honors each of the last two seasons. He earned Second Team All-MASCAC as a freshman and was a First Team selection as a junior and senior. The MASCAC did not issue awards for the 2020-21 year as the league did not offer a season.
Abbate posted team-highs of 15 goals and 24 assists for a league-best 39 points and a +23 rating this winter. He was instrumental in leading the Panthers to a program-record 23 wins (23-4-1), a school-record 19-game winning streak and an unbeaten trip through the MASCAC regular season and postseason. Abbate notched his 100th career point in early February and finished the season tied for fifth with 115 career points while playing just over three full seasons.
The Panthers won a fourth straight MASCAC Tournament title and sixth-consecutive regular season title and hosted an NCAA Tournament game for just the second time in school history. Plymouth State went a remarkable 12-1-1 at Hanaway Rink, with the lone loss coming against #10 University of New England, a national semifinalist, in the NCAA Tournament.
Plymouth State attained its highest-ever national ranking heading into NCAAs as the #8 team in the country, according to the USCHO poll.
