As we did with the fall sports, the conference still wants to recognize the great success of our winter student-athletes. Each week, the MASCAC will honor a champion from the 2019-20 championship season as MASCAC Players of the Week brought to you by GEICO.
Our final winter sport honorees have us back on the ice for the 2019-20 MASCAC Men's Ice Hockey All-Conference squads.
Junior Brian McGrath of Fitchburg State had been named the MASCAC Men’s Ice Hockey Player of the Year and headlines the 2019-20 All-Conference team as voted on by the seven coaches from around the conference.
McGrath, a junior goalie from Worcester, Mass., helped the Falcons to an 11-3-4 league record and the second seed in the MASCAC Tournament. At the end of the regular season, he was atop the conference in goals against average at 1.97, saves with 797, save percentage at .945 and winning percentage at .727 with four shutouts on the year.
Earning the 2019-20 MASCAC Rookie of the Year honors is Myles Abbate of Plymouth State. Helping the Panthers to their fourth-straight MASCAC regular season title and top spot in the tournament, the freshman forward from Norwell, Mass. closed out his first year first on the team in goals with 14, third in game-winning goals with three and led all freshman in the league in scoring with 23 points on 14 goals and nine assists.
Dean Fuller of Fitchburg State has been named the 2019-20 Champion’s Choice Men’s Ice Hockey Coach of the Year after leading the Falcons to a 14-8-4 regular season mark, 11-3-4 in conference play and the second seed in last week’s tournament.
Joining McGrath on the MASCAC All-Conference First Team are Ryan Murphy of Fitchburg State, Steven Leonard of UMass Dartmouth and FX Girard at forward, Callum Hofford of Salem State and Josh Boulos of Westfield State on defense.
Landing on the MASCAC Second Team with Abbate is Dillon Radin of UMass Dartmouth and Daniel Backstrom at forward, Drake Longaker of Plymouth State and Sean Leonard of UMass Dartmouth on defense and Thierry Messervier in goal.
