PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Two members of the Plymouth State University men’s ice hockey team were honored Tuesday with selection to the New England Hockey Writers Association 2014-15 Men’s Division II/III All-Star Team.
Senior Zach Sarig (Reading, Pa.) is one of six defensemen voted to the All-New England Team for Divisions II and III, earning the honor for the second consecutive season, and junior Andrew Wigg (Lantz, Nova Scotia) is one of nine forwards named to the team, his first All-New England selection. They were both Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) First Team All-Stars this past winter after leading the Panthers to the MASCAC regular season and tournament championships.
In addition, Sarig was selected to the All-United States College Hockey Online (USCHO) Third Team when the website announced its postseason awards late last week.
A 6-3, 220-pound defenseman, Sarig used his size and strength to control the Panther defensive zone while possessing one of, if not the most powerful slap shots in the league. He led the conference with 22 assists and tied for sixth overall in scoring with 27 points. Sarig was among the national leaders as well, ranking second in Division III in points per game by a defenseman (0.96).
A 6-0, 180-pound forward, Wigg was named MASCAC Player of the Year after leading the conference in scoring this season with 17 goals and 36 points. He also ranked ninth nationally in points per game (1.44) and 16th in goals per game (0.68). Wigg had a 16-game scoring streak from December 12 to March 7, and he tallied at least two points in 12 of his 25 games.
PSU finished the season with a 16-9-3 overall record after winning the MASCAC regular season title with a 14-3-1 mark. The Panthers won the MASCAC title over Salem State University, 6-2, and advanced to the NCAA National Championships for the first time since 2012, falling to Norwich University in the first round, 3-2.
