Freshman Abbie Brown (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) earned her first weekly honor as she was tabbed the Little East Conference (LEC) Rookie of the Week by conference officials Monday morning.
Brown led Fitchburg State to an impressive 2-0 week, posting nine saves with only one goal allowed. The rookie netminder recorded her first collegiate shutout on Saturday, registering five saves in a 2-0 LEC victory over Western Connecticut State University. Earlier in the week, Brown lifted the Falcons a 9-1 victory over Wheelock, stopping four shots in net with her complete-game effort.
This season, Brown has made an immediate impact on the Fitchburg State field hockey squad, posting a 3-1 record in her first four collegiate contests. She has totaled 18 saves on 22 chances, good for a .818 save percentage and a minimal 1.29 goals against average.
Brown has not only made an immediate impression on the field for the Falcons, but she has also made a name for herself within the highly regarded Little East Conference. Currently, Brown ranks among conference leaders in saves (6th), save percentage (4th) and goals against average (4th), while placing the Falcons at the top of the league standings.
Fitchburg State (3-1, 1-0 LEC) will be back in action again next Saturday as it travels to Worcester State College at 2:30 p.m.
