UMass Dartmouth’s Sheridan, Massachusetts Maritime’s McCarthy Headline 2016 MASCAC Football All-Conference Teams
Eddie Sheridan of UMass Dartmouth and Marshall McCarthy of Massachusetts Maritime are the 2016 MASCAC Football Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year and headline the 2016 MASCAC All-Conference teams as voted on by the coaches from around the league.
2016 Football All-Conference Team
Westfield, Mass. — Eddie Sheridan of UMass Dartmouth and Marshall McCarthy of Massachusetts Maritime are the 2016 MASCAC Football Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year and headline the 2016 MASCAC All-Conference teams as voted on by the coaches from around the league.
Sheridan, the senior running back from Chelmsford, Mass., had a solid senior season for the Corsairs, leading the MASCAC in total rushing yards with 1,087 and yards per game with 120.8. He was also second at the end of the regular season in yards per carry with 6.3 and all-purpose yards with 1,149 while also tallying seven rushing and one receiving touchdown. As a team, the Corsairs were sixth in the nation in rushing yards per game and second in New England.
Earning Defensive Player of the Year accolades, McCarthy, a senior from Duxbury, Mass., closed out the regular season as the NCAA Division III leader in solo tackles with 83 and leading the conference in total tackles with 108 and tackles per game with 12. His season-high in total tackles came against UMass Dartmouth where he registered 20 tackles, including 16 solo.
Joining Sheridan as a First Team All-Conference honoree is teammate Pat Sullivan, the 2016 MASCAC Offensive Lineman of the Year. The senior from Everett, Mass. helped a Corsairs offense that led the league in several categories, including rushing yards (2,879), rushing yards per game (287.9), rushing touchdowns (24), passing touchdowns (19), total offense (4,641) and points per game (30.1).
In his first year behind center for the Rams, Framingham State’s Adam Wojenski has earned 2016 MASCAC Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. The freshman from Stratford, Conn. completed his freshman campaign with 1,141 yards, 126.8 yards per game and nine touchdowns. His best game of the year was against Bridgewater State where he threw for two touchdowns and 266 yards.
First year defensive back Prince Gbaley of Plymouth State is the 2016 MASCAC Defensive Rookie of the Year. The freshman from Manchester, N.H. led the league in interceptions with six and interceptions returned for a touchdown with two. On his six interceptions, he accumulated 207 total yards, averaging 34.5 yards per return. He also tallied 28 total tackles, including 24 solo.
For helping his team improve in MASCAC play this season, Paul Castonia of Plymouth State has been named the 2016 Champion’s Choice Coach of the Year by his peers.
