Bridgewater State Men and Women Seek Repeat Titles at the 2022 MASCAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship

This year's championship will be hosted by Bridgewater State Bridgewater, Mass. The field events kick off the day at 10 am with track starting at 11 am.
At last year's MASCAC meet, the Bears won ten individual events and both relays, contributing to their championship score. Jacob DeAndrade claimed victories in both 100-meter (11.54) and 200-meter dash (22.06), while Trevor Wysong doubled-up in the distance events winning both the 5K (15:56.71) and 10K (33:53.16) events. Dimetri Morris took home the top prize in both hurdle events completing the 110-meter hurdles in 15.37 and the 400-meter hurdles in 1:03.65.
Morris and DeAndrade were also part of the BSU’s championship 4x100-meter relay, joining Matthew Lighten and Blake Kerwin for a time of 43.19. Bridgewater’s 4x400 also won the conference title as Noah Lanner, Cameron Riley, John Lara, and Mason Matias combined for a season-best time of 3:31.93.
In the field events, Exondus Barnes captured the titles in the long jump (7.00m) and high jump (1.94), while Joseph Zingarelli secured the pole vault crown (4.27m). Rounding out the Bears’ set of individual champions was Corey Stalters whose throw of 57.78m in the javelin earned him the title.
MASCAC runner-up Fitchburg State claimed six individual titles. Mid-distance was the strength of the Falcons on the track as Taban Manyok claimed the conference crown in both the 800-meter (2:00.56) and the 1500-meter (4:13.91) races. Their four other conference champions came on the field side with Carson Doody winning the triple jump (13.91m), Nicholas Zeoli winning the shot put (13.49m) and discus (38.01m), and Rodny Bonhomme securing the top spot in the hammer with a throw of 39.40m.
Westfield and Worcester each had one individual champion with the Owls’ Mitchel Maslowski winning the 400-meter dash (51.19) and Andrew Fottler winning the steeplechase for the Lancers.
On the women's side, the Bears won six individual events and the 4x400-meter relay at the 2021 meet, helping propel them to this year’s title. Senior Jamelah Foster picked up a pair of individual championships, winning the discus and hammer throws with marks of 37.00m and 39.79m, respectively. Abbi Peterson also picked up a first-place finish in a field event as she claimed the high jump title, clearing 1.60m.
BSU was just as strong on the track, winning four events. Nicole Major won the 800-meter race with a time of 2:26.70 with Alison McDonough and Meg McCullough winning the 100-meter hurdles (15.91) and 400-meter hurdles (1:11.56), respectively. The Bears’ 4x400-meter relay team of Lily Marra, Lindsey Golden, Mary Jok, and Ashley Schepis won their race with a time of 4:18.37.
Worcester State came away with wins in seven of the 20 events on Sunday with Abigail MacGregor contributing to three of them. Individually, MacGregor won the MASCAC Individual Championship in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, running them in 12.85 and 26.26, respectively. She was also part of the Lancers’ 4x100-meter relay that finished with a time of 49.30. Joining her for that race were Elena Pellegrini, Maureen Grady, and Bernice Mensah.
Mensah also won a pair of individual titles in field events. She placed first in both the long jump and triple jump with respective marks of 3.57m and 10.92m. Throwers Odelia Konadu and Riley Sanderson gave Worcester its last two individual champions. Konadu won the shotput with at throw of 12.09m, while Sanderson hurled the javelin 36.94m to take top prize.
Amy O’Sullivan won three of Westfield’s six individual titles, taking the 1500-meter, 5K, and 10K. She led the pack in the 1500 with a 4:57.12 finish and posted an 18:10.46 mark in the 5K. She finished the 10K in 37:46.44. While, O’Sullivan was handling the distance events, Moira McDonald was handling the sprints. She won the 400-meter dash with a 1:01.27 time. Mia McDonald gave the Owls another MASCAC crown as she won the steeplechase with a 12:26.88 finish and Mackenzie Connor secured the pole vault title with a mark of 2.75m.
