After an outstanding career for Worcester State, Andrew Fottler has been named the 2022 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Fottler, from Chelsmford, Mass. was a three-sport student-athlete for the Lancers, competing in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field.
This past cross country season, Fottler finished third in the MASCAC Championship for All-Conference accolades while helping the Lancers to their first-ever conference title in the event. He matched that finish in 2019 at the league meet and was seventh in 2018 where he was the top rookie to cross the line for Rookie of the Year honors.
For indoor track and field, Fottler was a competitor in the 3,000m run. During the 2019 MASCAC Championship, he crossed the line third in the event while the team came in third. The 2021 season wasn't contested due to COVID.
Rounding out his athletic resume was outdoor track and field. Most recently at the MASCAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship, Fottler earned a conference title in the 3,000m steeplechase with a first place finish. He also placed third in the 5,000m run.
His success was evident in the classroom too. He graduated Magna Cum Laude in May with a degree in business administration and 3.903 GPA. His academic achievements included winning the Margaret "Peg" Nugent Male Scholar Athlete Award which is the top academic award from Worcester State and was an eight-time MASCAC All-Academic honoree which means he received the honor every time he was eligible. He was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma National College Student Athlete Honor Society in 2021.
When he wasn't competing or in the classroom, Fottler was an active member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), part of the athlete mentor program and helped with Worcester State Special Olympics events. He also was a pen pal with the local elementary school and assisted with the annual field day.
The MASCAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year has been awarded annually since 1980 to a student-athlete who has excelled in both the classroom and field of play while maintaining at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average through their last year of athletic eligibility.
