Massachusetts Maritime's Kyle Johnston Named 2020 MASCAC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year
After an outstanding career on the gridiron and in the classroom, Kyle Johnston of Massachusetts Maritime was named as the 2020 MASCAC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year as voted by the Athletic Directors from the conference.
After an outstanding career on the gridiron and in the classroom, Kyle Johnston of Massachusetts Maritime was named as the 2020 MASCAC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year as voted by the Athletic Directors from the conference.
Johnston, a senior football defensive lineman from Raynham, Mass., etched his name in the Massachusetts Maritime record books after racking up 12.5 sacks, a MASCAC high and fifth best in the nation. He tied for second in the conference with 19.5 tackles for loss, forced a league-high three fumbles and tallied 57 total tackles in 2019 to earn American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Second Team All-American honors.
He was named to the MASCAC All-Conference team in 2018 and 2019, New England Football Writer's All-New England team (2019) and D3football.com All-East Third Team (2019).
Throughout his football career as a Buccaneer, he amassed 164 tackles, 25.5 sacks, 49.5 tackles for loss, eight forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. In 2018, he was named the Most Outstanding Defensive Lineman and Team MVP in 2019 by Massachusetts Maritime.
His success wasn't limited to the field. Johnston will graduate in June with a degree in international maritime business. He currently has a 3.534 GPA and has been a Massachusetts Maritime Dean's List honoree for Fall 2016 and Spring 2018 plus President's List in Fall 2017, 2018 and 2019.
He also was named to the MASCAC Fall All-Academic squad for four straight years from 2016-2019.
When he isn't studying or registering tackles, Johnston works as a Marine Insurance Underwriter intern with Travelers Insurance. He also worked for Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya preparing training sessions for conservancy staff to educate them and the company and worked hands-on with the marketing department to better advertise what the Conservancy does in 2019. In 2017, he worked with Massachusetts Maritime staff to load the T.S. Kennedy with supplies to aid victims of Hurricane Harvey.
The MASCAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year has been awarded annually since 1980 to a student-athlete who has excelled in both the classroom and field of play while maintaining at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average through their last year of athletic eligibility.
