Mass. Maritime's McCabe, Westfield State's Canty Earn All-American Honors at NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships
Massachusetts Maritime's Colin McCabe and Westfield State's William Canty finished in the top eight of their event on Friday to earn All-American accolades at the 2019 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Massachusetts Maritime's Colin McCabe and Westfield State's William Canty finished in the top eight of their event on Friday to earn All-American accolades at the 2019 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
McCabe is the first Buccaneers All-American since 1999. He came in third in the shot put with a top throw of 17.36m (56' 11.50"). Earlier this year, he was the MASCAC and New England Alliance champion in the event and caps off his outstanding sophomore season with an All-American showing.
Canty came in seventh in the decathlon for All-American honors. He entered the final day of the 2-day event in 12th place. He started the day by finishing sixth in the 110 hurdles, earning 797 points, which vaulted him to ninth place in the competition.
He continued to record strong performances throughout the day, posting a sixth place result in the pole vault, clearing 4.20 meters (13-9.25"), and then capped the competition by placing fifth in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:40.72, earning 676 points and securing his spot on the podium.
Canty finished with 6,683 points, 82 points off his school record total set earlier this season.
Also competing today for Bridgewater State was Jayci Andrews, Kira Gilbreath and Joshua Higgins. Andrews posted a time of 13.87 seconds in the 100 hurdlea to advance to Saturday's finals. She will compete in the finals of the 100 hurdles on Saturday afternoon at 12:50 PM. She will also compete in the finals of the 400-meter hurdles on Saturday afternoon at 2:15 PM.
Gilbreath placed 18th in the shot put on Friday as she posted a mark of 42 feet, 5.25 inches (12.93m). Gilbreath was competing at the NCAA outdoor championships for the second straight season. She finished 22nd in the shot put at the 2018 championships. Higgins finished 17th in the preliminaries of the 800-meter run on Friday afternoon with a time of 1:54.40 in the 800 while competing out of a field of 20 student-athletes.
In the high jump, Fitchburg State's Christian McWhinnie-Armstead placed 17th overall in the high jump with mark of 1.98 meters (6' 5"). He also was a MASCAC champion in this event, clearing 2.01 meters back in April.
