Lancers Ninth Inning Bid Falls Short versus Falcons

Lancers Ninth Inning Bid Falls Short versus Falcons

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Baseball team (5-15, 4-4) returned tight back to action today for another conference battle as they headed to Fitchburg State to take on the Falcons (6-20, 1-8) in a battle to keep the Lancers above a conference .500.

Final

Worcester State: 4

Fitchburg State: 9

How it Happened:

After a quiet first inning the Lancers would nab a two run lead in the second inning as junior Michael Cooper, a Fitchburg native, hit a homerun, allowing himself and senior Tom Halliwell (Leominster, Ma) to return back to the dugout in success. Fitchburg State would answer with a run of their own from Matthew Kelly in the bottom of the third.

The fourth inning would see each team successfully shut out any scoring opportunities as junior Jarret Morrill (Chemlsford, MA) would allow just a single hit in the inning.

After being closed out of the fifth by the Falcons, the Lancers would look to return the favor but Fitchburg State would tie things up with Worcester State after Kelly would again cross home plate off a single. Luke Sturner would provide Fitchburg State the lead in the sixth off a DuHaime sacrifice bunt would give him the opportunity to sprint home. An error in the ensuing plays would result in run number four for the Falcons and a 4-2 lead in the game.

The Falcons would continue to tack one runs in the following innings, eventually taking a 9-2 lead into the top of the seventh where Worcester would dedicate their focus to keeping the game going.

The Lancers managed to grab back one run with a junior Tyler Smith (Lemonister, MA) homerun which brought in first year Jeremy Delacruz (Lowell, MA) for two runs and cutting the Falcons lead to just five with only a single out recorded. Worcester would look to get runners on base quickly but the Falcons defense, having been rattled by the earlier attack, buckled down to grab the final two outs and the first win in the three game series this season between the teams.
