Baseball Walks Off on Worcester State

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College baseball team prevailed over Worcester State University in an 11-10 extra-inning thriller in non-conference action Monday afternoon at Jack Vallely Diamond.

With the victory, Curry improves to 5-10 overall on the season.

The Colonels were down to their final out in the bottom of the ninth when sophomore Tommy Marshall (Hanson, Mass.) stepped to the plate with his team trailing 9-8. On a 1-1 pitch, Marshall crushed a solo home run well over the right field fence, tying the score at 9-9 and forcing extra innings.

The Lancers took the lead back in the top of the 10th on an RBI double from Tyler Smith to go ahead 10-9, and it looked like the run would be enough to secure the win. With two on and two outs in the bottom of the frame, Colonel sophomore Brett Heggs (Taunton, Mass.) hit a routine grounder to second base that appeared to be the final out of the game, but the ball was booted, allowing pinch runner Yaya Fuentes (Mission, Texas) to score from second base to tie the game.

A batter later, junior George Calderon (New York, N.Y.) finished the game by slicing a base hit to right field to walk the Colonels off with the win.

Freshman Justin Schloss (Brooklyn, N.Y.) earned the win on the bump, allowing just one earned run on three hits with one strikeout in three innings pitched in relief.

Six Colonels recorded two hits in the victory. Heggs led all players with three runs scored, while Schloss, Marshall, and junior Ryan Goonan (Raynham, Mass.) all finished with two runs batted in.

Next up for the Colonels, they will play their second straight game against a MASCAC opponent, taking on Bridgewater State on the road on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
