Volleyball Falls in Three to Regis

Worcester, MA- It was a tight match for all three sets as the Lancers battled Regis in every set but ultimately fell 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-21) on Tuesday night at Higgins Court within the Regis Athletic Facility.

The first set saw three different lead changes in between the two teams with Worcester State taking the first point of the match with a kill off of junior Camryn Burgio. Regis swiftly captured the first lead change with the Lancers close on their points before an attack error by the Pride gave the lead back to Worcester. The Lancers went on a 3-point run before Regis recaptured the lead and went on their own 6-2-point run. Worcester State kept the game close after the surge with the help of a service ace by Burgio and first year Kaitlin Cueva recording three kills in the stretch. Sophomore Meaghan Marcoux worked to close out the game, after a block by first year Cassidy D'Esposito and junior Erin Gaffney, with a beautiful service ace, but the Pride claimed the final point of a first ball kill to close it out.

After a strong showing in the first set, Regis came out with intensity in the second and quickly grabbed an 18-8 lead before the Lancers found their first set groove behind the continued efforts of Burgio and Cueva as well as the court work of senior Gabby Alberghini. Worcester's surge came just shy in the second set with an unlucky service error ending the set.

While the Lancers never held the lead in the final set, they did record three service aces by junior Maeve Cadogan and some all-around great team play on the court throughout the night. Worcester State made one final push, closing to within two points at 22-20 on a solo block by Cadogan, but Regis closed out the set and the match by scoring three of the final four points. Sophomore Angela Colonis led the team with 12 assists and 10 digs, while Cadogan recorded a team leading 8.5 points. Alberghini was strong through the match with 20 total attacks to partner up with Cadogan and Cueva, who had 6 kills and 6.5 points on the night.

Worcester State moves to 0-4 on the season, while Regis now sits at 2-3. The Lancers are back in action Thursday night at John B. Brissette court when they face off against Worcester rival WPI, with serve scheduled for 7pm.
