Westfield State overcomes slow start for a 71-48 victory over Western New England

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Junior guard Lee Vazquez (Attleboro, MA) poured in 20 points and junior center Matt Devine (Pembroke, MA) had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Westfield State men’s basketball team to a 71-48 victory over Western New England in a non-league outing Tuesday evening (Dec. 6).

Vazquez also had six assists and six steals as the Owls raised their record to 6-2. The Golden Bears fall to 3-4.

Western New England had a strong start taking a 19-9 advantage midway through the opening half before the hosts came back to take a 32-26 lead at intermission.

The Owls broke the game open by using a 13-3 run to start the second half to take a 45-29 advantage with approximately 14 minutes left in the game.

Devine, who had seven blocks, then made two free throws with 8:09 remaining to give the Owls a 59-38 lead.

Also scoring in double figures for Westfield were junior guard Travis Nally (Melrose, MA) who netted 13 points and freshman forward Grant Cooper (Northampton, MA) who contributed 12 points

Senior guard Andre Shaw (New York, NY) was the only player in double figures for Western New England with 14 points. Junior guard Damon Alston (New Britain, CT) and sophomore forward Kevin Wilkes (Troy, NY) each had eight points.

Wilkes, and sophomore forwards Daniel Minto (West Hempstead, NY) and Dennis Rinaldi (Harrison, NY) all had six rebounds.
