Softball Rallies to Draw as Part of Doubleheader with Bridgewater State

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College softball team played Bridgewater State to a 10-4 loss and 5-5 tie in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon at D. Forbes Will Field.

With the results, Curry moves to 11-13-1 overall on the season.

The tie in game two, a result of the game being called after six innings due to darkness, is the first Curry softball game to end in a tie since a 4-4 draw with Salve Regina University on March 28, 2002. Only six of Curry's 18 current rostered players had been born yet the last time the Colonels played to a tie.

Game 1 - Bridgewater State 10, Curry 4

The Bears capitalized on seven Curry errors in game one to cruise past the hosts by a final score of 10-4.

Bridgewater State scored twice in both the first and third innings to jump out to a 4-0 lead before the Colonels broke the ice in the bottom of the third. Sophomore Jillian Rogers (East Freetown, Mass.) notched an RBI single plating classmate Natalia O'Kleasky (Coventry, R.I.) to cut the deficit to 4-1.

The Bears responded with three runs in the top of the fourth to take a commanding 7-1 lead, but Curry answered back in the bottom of the fifth. Junior Taylor McDermott (Durham, Conn.) cut into the lead with a two-run double to start the rally, before scoring on a wild pitch to move the Colonels within three at 7-4.

The three-run margin was short-lived, as three Bridgewater State runs crossed the plate in the top of the sixth to give the game its final score of 10-4.

McDermott led the Colonels with a pair of hits in the defeat to go along with a pair of runs batted in and a run scored. O'Kleasky went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk.

Game 2 - Curry 5, Bridgewater State 5 (6 Innings)

Curry rallied to earn a tie in the bottom of the sixth inning to salvage a tie in game two.

For the second consecutive game, Bridgewater State jumped out to an early lead by scoring a pair in the top of the first, but Rogers answered in the bottom of the third with her second RBI single in as many games to cut the Bear advantage to 2-1.

Bridgewater State went back up by a pair on a safety squeeze in the bottom of the top of the fourth, but Curry had an answer in the bottom of the frame. With two outs and the bases empty, freshman Samantha King (Stafford Springs, Conn.) belted an 0-1 fastball over the centerfield wall for her first collegiate home run, running the score to 3-2.

Trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth, Curry got one run back on a Madelyn White (Franklin, Mass.) RBI single, putting the game within two.

With darkness pushing the Colonels down to their final out an inning prematurely, the Colonels mounted a two-out rally to salvage a tie in the bottom of the sixth. With runners on second and third, Rogers smacked a base hit through the left side, plating O'Kleasky and senior Emily Bussiere (Stow, Mass.), giving the game its final score of 5-5.

Rogers was Curry's leading hitter in game two, finishing 3-for-4 with three runs batted in and a run scored. Bussiere went 2-for-4 with two runs in the stalemate.

Next up for the Colonels, they will host the University of New England on Saturday afternoon for a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader at D. Forbes Will Field. First pitch in game one is slated for 12 p.m.
