Women’s Volleyball Takes Down Fitchburg State

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College Women's Volleyball team took down non-conference opponent Fitchburg State University Saturday afternoon at home.

The Colonels defeated the Falcons of Fitchburg State (25-22, 25-19, 21-25, 26-24).

With the win, Curry moves forward with an overall record of 4-14 and 0-3 in the CCC.

The opening set of the matchup saw two evenly matched non-conference sides. With the Score tied at 15-15 midway through the first set, Curry's Lauren Guzman (Cranston, R.I.) would mark a pair of kills to grant the Colonels the lead they would hold through the duration of the opening set. Two more kills from Curry's Guzman and three from Sonja Matheson (Voluntown, Conn.) would cap off the first-set victory at 25-22.

The visiting Falcons would hold the lead in the second set until Curry's Brooke Reissfelder marked a kill to tie the set at 18-18. With Curry's Avia Fraine (Mattapoisett, Mass.) on the service, the Colonels would score seven unanswered points to close the second set at a final score of 25-19. 

The visiting Falcons led off the third set on a 7-2 scoring run. A series of kills from Guzman and a service ace from Lexie Jenkins (Burns, Wyo.) pushed the Colonels into the lead, now leading 8-7. Fitchburg State would hold off further Colonels scoring runs, taking the third set by a score of 25-21. 

The final set of the afternoon began similarly to the opening set of the day. Curry would grab the lead following an Amber Buttaro (Tewksbury, Mass.) service ace and errors by the visitors. The set would tie again at 19-19 and 22-22, prompting Curry to take a timeout. A kill from the visiting Falcons granted Fitchburg a one-point lead, however, Curry's Brooke Reissfelder tallied another kill on the afternoon to tie the set again, this time at 23-23. A kill and service ace from Curry's Lauren Guzman along with an error by the visitors sealed the fourth-set victory and ultimately the home win for the Colonels Saturday afternoon. 

The Colonels were led by Lauren Guzman who marked a career-high 23 kills paired with 12 digs as Sonja Matheson marked 13 kills on 34 total attacks, while Curry's Brooke Reissfelder aided in the win at home with 32 assists.

The Colonels will be back on the hardwood Wednesday as they travel to Springfield, Mass. to continue conference action against Western New England at 7 PM.
