Worcester State Field Hockey Remains Undefeated in Conference Play

Worcester, MA- A drizzly Saturday matchup between Worcester State and Framingham had the Lancers vying to remain undefeated in the Little East Conference. Last year saw the Lancers fall to Framingham in a 4-3 heartbreaker and Worcester was determined to not have a repeat performance on Saturday

Just five minutes into the first quarter saw a scrum in front of the cage that resulted in a stroke call in favor of Framingham. Angelina Serra stepped up to the stroke and launched the ball to the top left corner to put the Rams up 1-0 early in the game. Worcester State refused to be down for long and just under six minutes later after peppering Framingham goalie Kaitlin Loughlin, junior Zoe Athanasopoulos (Hopedale, MA) nabbed the ball off the goalkeepers' pads and sent it careening off the backboard. The 1-1 tie carried into the second quarter until junior Grace Adams (Leominster, MA) received a pass across the middle from sophomore Madison Avilla (Westport, MA) to put the go-ahead goal past the defense.

The game remained at 2-1 for a majority of the second half even as the Lancers worked to extend their lead. In the 48' minute an insurance goal was scored when senior Molly Cutting (Auburn, MA) received a pass from the right off the stick of senior Karalyn Jones (Wilbraham, MA) to put the Lancers up 3-1. Framingham attempted a late fourth quarter surge to close the gap, but Worcester State held strong and closed out the victory.

Athanasopoulus led the Lancers with seven shots and a goal on the afternoon while sophomore Madison Ferrara (Somerset, MA) made five saves in the game.

The Rams now move to 5-4, 1-3 on the season while the Lancers now sit at 7-3, 4-0 in the conference. Worcester State is back in action on October 5 when they travel to Southern Maine for another conference matchup.
