Lancers Drop Home Opener to Lions

Worcester, MA - The Women's Basketball team hosted their season opener on Wednesday night against Eastern Nazarene as part of Worcester State's Tip-Off Madness night.

The first half saw Worcester trailing as they tried to build up the early momentum. Both Eastern Nazarene's Delaney Walker and Worcester State's senior Katie Hurynowicz (Tyngsboro, MA) scored 10 points each, leading their teams in the half, with Hurynowicz hitting triple threes late in the first quarter to close the gap in the action. Worcester nearly overtook the Lions, but remained behind by one point in the rally. As time ran out Eastern Nazarene pulled away with points, ending the half 36-21.

The third period opened up with a lot of hustle out of the Lancers as they tried to quickly work their way back into the action. First year Lena Waldron (Quincy, MA) played strong defense on the night and netted three points in the game. Swinging the ball around the circle quickly, the Lancers were able to earn 34 points to close the gap forcing a free throw battle off for the final few minutes of the game, but Eastern Nazarene remained on top. Despite a solid effort by the Lancers to jump ahead the game ended in a 64-55 loss.

The Lancers (0-1, 0-0) face Clark University next on Friday night at home as the first game of the Worcester City Tournament weekend.
