Remillard Tallies Two Assists and One Goal to Help Lift Golden Bears Past Westfield St. 4-0

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 8, 2021) – After no goals were scored in the opening 45 minutes of the contest, the Western New England Golden Bears men's soccer team exploded for four goals in the final 21 minutes of the contest to take down the visiting Owls of Westfield State University on Wednesday evening from Supernant Field.

Records:

Western New England: 2-0-1

Westfield State University: 2-1

How it Happened:

The Golden Bears came out of the gates flying on Wednesday, giving little opportunity for the visiting Owls of Westfield State to take control of the contest. Western New England would get multiple opportunities in the first half to score goals, though backup keeper for Westfield State Collin O'Brien stood tall between the pipes after coming in relief duty after starting GK Griffin Brown was replaced due to injury. In the first half, the Golden Bears took five shots, with two on goal forcing both Brown and O'Brien to make one save each, respectively. Each team took two corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes.

Western New England would continue to dominate the offensive side of the ball to start the second half. Chances from Mike Milazzo, Sean Lanzillo, and Andrew Crane came up just short for the Golden Bears in the search for the game's first goal. In the 69th minute, senior captain Matt Remillard took the ball into the box and took two dribbles and saw the ball deflect to teammate Chris Allen who tucked the ball into the lower left corner of the net, giving Western New England the 1-0 lead.

This only jumpstarted the offense for the Golden Bears with their second goal coming in the 72nd minute with Mike Riley sending the ball into the box where Remillard redirected the ball to Roger Leland who tapped the ball into the back of the net for the Golden Bears to lead 2-0. In the 86th minute, the Golden Bears earned a penalty kick that Milazzo took for Western New England. Milazzo was able to score off the penalty kick and extend the lead to 3-0. The fourth and final goal came less than a minute later when Remillard collected a long ball from the back field and secured the ball for two dribbles in the box before sliding the ball into the bottom left corner of the net to score the fourth and final goal for the Golden Bears to defeat the Owls 4-0.
