Fourth Quarter Surge Hands Worcester State First Conference Lost

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Field Hockey team looked to continue their winning streak on Wednesday as they traveled to Gorham, Maine to face-off with the Southern Maine Huskies for a Little East Conference game between two undefeated members.

Worcester started the game off strong scoring the first goal of the night in the 7th minute. Junior Zoe Athanasopoulos (Hopedale, MA) took a shot off of her own rebound to put the Lancers up 1-0. The Huskies retaliated quickly just two minutes later as Samantha Ellis sent a ball into Izzy Hurlburt who was able to find the back of the net to tie up the score.

Both teams fought hard for the next two periods but neither team was able to gain another tally on the scoreboard. Worcester was out shot 6-3 in the second period, but goalie Madison Ferrera made a number of solid saves to keep the Lancers in the game. Worcester was again outshot in the third quarter, but continued to work hard and stay organized in the backfield to keep the quarter scoreless.

The Huskies were eventually able to break through Worcester's defense in the fourth quarter, starting off with a goal by Brooke Carson assisted by Samantha Ellis. Just three minutes later Southern Maine's Sage Drinkwater was able to take another shot that would find itself behind Worcester's last line and into the goal. Shortly after that, Hannah Banks would carry the ball into the circle to hand it off to Abigail Chartier for the Huskies fourth and final goal to finish the game. The Lancers had several last minute chances to score another goal, but Husky goalkeeper Julianna Kiklis kept the Lancers away from the backboard.

The Lancers (7-4, 4-1) will host Western Connecticut on Saturday afternoon at John Coughlin field for another conference matchup game.
