Softball Splits with Mass. Maritime

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. - The Curry College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader against Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Wednesday afternoon at Rollins Field.

With the split, Curry moves to 6-5 overall on the young season.

Game 1 - Mass. Maritime 7, Curry 5

The Buccaneers were very opportunistic in game one, scoring seven runs on just five hits to claim the victory over the Colonels.

Neither team scored until Curry broke the ice in the top of the fourth inning, when sophomore Jillian Rogers (East Freetown, Mass.) single through the left side to put the Colonels on top 1-0.

In the bottom of the frame, a two-run home run put the hosts ahead 2-1, but Curry sophomore Natalia O'Kleasky (Coventry, R.I.) recorded an RBI single in the top of the fifth to level the score back up at 2-2.

A three-spot from Mass. Maritime in the bottom of the fifth inning put the Buccaneers ahead 5-2, but Curry refused to go down quietly. Freshman Gracie Martineau (Westminster, Mass.) cut into Mass. Maritime's lead with an RBI groundout in the top of the sixth inning to begin the comeback, but the Buccaneers scored two more in the bottom of the frame for some much-needed insurance.

Senior Emily Bussiere (Stow, Mass.) scored on a throwing error in the top of the seventh, while O'Kleasky drove in another run on an RBI triple, but the comeback bid fell short in the two-run defeat.

Rogers had an enormous game to start off the day both at the plate and in the circle. She batted 3-for-4 with one run batted in at the dish, while striking out 12 Buccaneers and only allowing a single hit. O'Kleasky notched a pair of hits with two runs batted in, while junior Jordan Ferullo (Burlington, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.

Game 2 - Curry 8, Mass. Maritime 4

The Colonels rebounded in game two to double up the Buccaneers 8-4 behind another stellar performance from Rogers.

The sophomore opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with an RBI single to left field, scoring O'Kleasky to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

The score remained 1-0 until the top of the fifth, when Curry scored four times to break the game open. Junior Madelyn White (Franklin, Mass.) drove in O'Kleasky to start the inning on a single up the middle to put Curry ahead 2-0, before Rogers doubled Curry's lead with a two-run triple. She would score a batter later on a Samantha King (Stafford Springs, Conn.) RBI fielder's choice.

Mass. Maritime got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth, but Curry rebounded with three in the top of the sixth to put the game out of reach. Rogers recorded a two-run double to open the inning, before an RBI single from King stretched Curry's lead to 8-2. The Buccaneers scored twice in the bottom of the seventh, but the rally fell far short in Curry's victory.

Rogers finished game two going 3-for-4 with five runs batted in and two runs scored to lead Curry. White, O'Kleasky, junior Taylor McDermott (Durham, Conn.), and junior Caitlyn Wood (Saugus, Mass.) all also had three hits in the victory.

In the circle, Wood went the distance allowing three earned runs on seven hits with six strikeouts to earn her third victory of the season.

Next up for the Colonels, they will play their home-opening doubleheader against Dean on Friday afternoon. First pitch for game one from D. Forbes Will Field is slated for 3 p.m.
