Worcester State Falls in Three in Battle of Worcester

Worcester, MA- Worcester State Volleyball hosted their home opener tonight at Brissette Court, facing off against fellow Worcester school, WPI. The Lancers fell in three straight sets (25-13, 25-14, 25-17) in the fast-paced match.

The first set was a tight match through the first 15 points with WPI just edging out Worcester with the 9-6 lead, but errors by the Lancers quickly saw WPI spread the lead jump to five points. Worcester was able to steal a few points off Engineer errors, closing the gap to four. WPI quickly jumped out to a big lead off the serve of Lily Eldridge which led to 10 straight points before a service error stalled her just shy from closing out the first set.

The second set again saw Eldridge as the deciding factor turning a three-point difference to seven before another service error put the ball back into Worcester State hands. The Lancers' Megan Marcoux and Angela Colonis helped to cut the lead to within five during their rotations, but further errors in the second set closed it out in the Engineers favor.

The final set saw the Lancers keep it within six points for the majority of the set as both teams battled across the net. Camryn Burgio, Marcoux and Colonis were a dominant presence on the court in the final set seemingly everywhere on the court, keeping rallies stretching. WPI managed to close out the set and match with 9-7-point advantage in the end.

WPI is now 3-1 on the season and will face Ramapo (NJ) at the Bar Tournament on Saturday while the Lancers now sit at 0-5. They will host a tri-match between Trinity and UNE this Saturday, facing off first at 1pm with Trinity followed by a 5pm match with UNE.
