Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Tri-Match at Mass. Maritime

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. - The Curry College Women's Volleyball team began their season with two wins Saturday afternoon at a tri-match hosted by Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

The Colonels bested the hosting Buccaneers 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-19) in the opening match and defeated Anna Maria 3-0 (25-16, 25-8, 25-17) to complete the sweep hosted by Mass. Maritime.

With the wins, Curry begins their season with a record of 2-0.

In the opening match, Curry took an early lead thanks to a 13-3 run late in the first set. Sophomore Lexie Jenkins (Burns, Wyo.) and Senior Lauren Guzman (Cranston, R.I.) both contributed a pair of service aces late in the first set to propel the Colonels to their first set victory.

In the second set, Curry took a quick 8-1 lead over the Buccaneers; Avia Fraine (Mattapoisett, Mass.) marked three service aces in the run. Mass. Maritime lessened the deficit, bringing the score to 10-8 following a series of kills by Marlo Stark and errors on the Colonels' end. A 15-8 run to close out the second frame granted the Colonels a 2-0 lead heading into the third set.

Curry continued its dominant playstyle at the start of the third set, taking a 13-2 lead. Following a timeout, the Buccaneers managed to bring the Curry lead to just six. Mass. Maritime benefitted from errors made by the Colonels late in the third set but could not catch the Curry College lead. A Mass. Maritime service error would bring the match to a close.

Guzman led all players in kills (17) and total attacks (33) for an attack percentage of .424. Junior Avia Fraine marked a match-high 19 digs in the victory.

In Curry's second contest of the afternoon, the Colonels took down the Anna Maria AMCats 3-0 (25-16, 25-8, 25-17).

The Colonels took a quick 9-2 lead in the first set of the day's second match, with Haley Ferrara (Sandown, N.H.) contributing two service aces and a kill. The AMCats stayed in the fight, closing the Curry College lead to just one until a series of attack errors and service aces from Lexie Jenkins

A kill from Curry's Ferrara and a bad set by the opposing AMCats granted the Colonels a 1-0 set lead in their second match.

The Colonels dominated the second set, holding Anna Maria to just eight points.

Anna Maria held on in the final set, coming as close as one point away from the Colonels' lead. However, Curry pulled away with the lead, Lauren Guzman leading the charge into the final moments and marking the final kill of the match to seal the victory in favor of the Colonels.

Curry College senior outside hitter Lauren Guzman led her side with 14 kills on 35 total attacks in the second win of the afternoon. Haley Ferrara contributed heavily to Curry's dominant defense with 15 digs to lead the team.

The Colonels will be back on the hardwood Wednesday as they travel to Franklin, Mass. to face the Dean College Bulldogs at 7 PM.
