Softball Salvages Split with Fitchburg State

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Fitchburg State University Wednesday afternoon at D. Forbes Will Field.

The Falcons won the first game 6-3 in eight innings, before the Colonels blanked the visitors 4-0 in game two.

Game 1 - Fitchburg State 6, Curry 3 (8 Innings)

Fitchburg State came from three runs down to stun Curry in extra innings in the first game of the doubleheader.

Curry opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with an RBI single down the right field line by senior Madison Schwartz (Bridgewater, Mass.). Coming in to score from second base on the play was junior Taylor McDermott (Durham, Conn.) to give Curry a 1-0 lead.

Junior Madelyn White (Franklin, Mass.) extended Curry's lead to two with an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth inning, followed by an RBI single from McDermott to put Curry ahead 3-0.

The Falcons scored two in the sixth, one in the seventh, and three in the eighth to rally past the Colonels and win their second contest of the season.

Offensively, the Colonels were paced by McDermott and sophomore Jillian Rogers (East Freetown, Mass.), who each notched a pair of hits in the defeat. McDermott scored one run while also driving in another.

Junior Caitlyn Wood (Saugus, Mass.) took the loss in the circle for Curry, allowing two earned runs on seven hits over 6.2 innings with two strikeouts.

Game 2 - Curry 4, Fitchburg State 0

Curry rebounded in game two to take care of the Falcons behind a stellar pitching performance from Hailey King (Cranston, R.I.).

The sophomore threw a complete game shutout for the Colonels, allowing seven hits with no walks while striking out a pair to move to 3-1 overall on the season.

Curry scored twice in the bottom of the first and twice in the bottom of the fourth to account for all the offense King would need. The Colonels opened the scoring on a Rogers RBI double in the first. She came around to score later in the first on a Fitchburg State error.

In the fourth, freshman Mia Bianchi (New Milford, N.J.) and junior Emily Bussiere (Stow, Mass.) scored on an error to extend Curry's lead to 4-0, a score that held as the final.

Curry was led once again by Rogers, who went 1-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI. Bussiere was the only player to cross home plate twice.

Next up for the Colonels, they will open a Commonwealth Coast Conference play with a doubleheader at Nichols College on Saturday. First pitch in game one is slated for 12 p.m.
