Westfield State downs Western New England College 60-56 with second half comeback

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.
– Sophomore guard Lee Vazquez (Attleboro, MA) scored seven of his game-high 17 points in the final 2:47 to lead the Westfield State men’s basketball team to a 60-56 comeback victory over Western New England College Tuesday evening (Dec. 7) at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.

The Owls, who trailed 27-20 at halftime, are now 3-5 while the Golden Bears remain winless at 0-7 after dropping their third game of the season by six or less points.

Vazquez just missed a double-double after pulling down nine rebounds while compiling three steals.

Sophomore center Matt Devine (Pembroke, MA) contributed 16 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. He also had five of the team’s seven blocked shots. Junior forward Marcellus Lee (Quincy, MA) was the third Owls' player in double figures with 14 points after making seven-of-11 shots from the field.

Western New England College also had three players in double figures with senior forward Brad Thomka (Springfield, MA) notching 16 points with seven rebounds and four blocks. Junior guard Andre Shaw (New York, NY) also came close to a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds in a reserve role. Senior guard Chris Devine (Wilbraham, MA) chipped-in with 10 points.

Westfield State jumped to an early 10-1 lead before the Golden Bears allowed only two points in the last 10:56 of the half to take a seven-point advantage at the break.

The Owls came back to tie the game at 31-31 on a basket by Matt Devine with 15:03 left. It was 39-39 when WSU scored eight straight points for a 47-39 margin following a short jumper by sophomore guard Travis Nally (Melrose, MA) at the 5:13 mark.

Westfield took a 52-42 lead when Vazquez drained a three-pointer with 2:47 remaining.

Western New England College didn’t quit getting within 58-55 when Shaw converted a pair of charity shots with 30 seconds left.

Senior forward Jesse Benoit (Granby, MA) sank two foul shots for the visitors with 13 seconds remaining for a 60-55 edge. He finished with nine points and eight rebounds.

Westfield State shot 41.4% from the field while Western New England College made only 34.5% of its field goal attempts. The Owls held a slim 41-36 edge off the boards.
