Lancers Lose with Seventh Inning Struggles

Worcester, MA- After an exciting late inning win yesterday in a conference matchup with Westfield State, the Worcester State Lancers Baseball team (5-12, 4-2) was back on the road to challenge the Coast Guard Academy Bears (12-7, 3-2)  in an out of conference mid week primer for this weekend's series versus Framingham State.

Final:

Coast Guard Academy: 14

Worcester State: 3

How it Happened:

Worcester was quick to the scoring this afternoon as junior Tyler Smith (Leominster, MA) found himself on second with the first at bat and was carried home by first year Ryan Jewett (Natick, MA) with the next at bat to jump out to a 1-0 lead. The Bears would settle in for the rest of the inning grabbing three outs on the next four at bats.

In the bottom of the first Coast Guard would claim back two runs on sophomore Nolan Turner (Barnstable, MA) with a single to left center by Tacchini bringing in both runs. The bottom of the second would see additional two runs coming across for the Bears taking a 4-1 lead into the third. WOrcester would not sit by quietly though as junior Michael Cooper (Fitchburg, MA) would single to center field with two outs registered to send home junior Anthony Iamarone (Providence, RI) and Jewett to close the gap to a single run.

First year Tedy Cove (Worcester, MA) would take over mound duties in the third and take his batters down 1, 2, 3 to keep the single run difference. Coast Guard would grab another two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth off a relief pitcher first year Franklin Sierra (Boston, MA) to extend their lead to 7-3 while the Lancers struggled in the middle innings to create solid offense.

Coast Guard would open up the game in the seventh, recording seven runs to jump out to a 14-3 lead that the Lancers would work to overcome in the remaining at bats. Worcester was unable to mount the offensive power in the eighth and ninth, dropping the game to the Bears 14-3.

With the conclusion of their mid week battle, the Lancers (5-13, 4-2) will now switch their gears back to MASCAC action as they head to Framingham State on Friday for a nine-inning tilt at 3pm.
