Lancers Allow Just Single Run in Sweep of Lasers in Pink Out Game

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Softball team (17-12, 7-3) would return to action after a dominant sweep of Bridgewater State on Sunday, to take on the Lasell Lasers (19-14, 11-3) in a midweek non conference battle. Today's game was also being played in support of the Rosen Cancer Awareness Fund created by Gregg '86 and Pam '87 Rosen, aims to provide a robust curriculum that supports peer to peer education regarding early cancer detection.  Raising Awareness in our young people, particularly Worcester State students in the field of public health, can effectively expedite these important educational initiatives to curb the prevalence of late-stage cancer and increase longevity.

Game 2

Worcester State: 4

Lasell: 0

How it happened:

First Game:

The first game starts with quick runs recorded by junior Emma Lanpher (Charlton, MA) and sophomore Emma Lapoint (Westfield, MA) giving Worcester State a 2 run advantage over Lasell early in this game. But with two aces on the mound for the first game runs were hard to come by for the next few innings as both Lasell and Worcester State played tight defense and even tighter pitching to keep eachother off the board.

The game had a brief five minute delay with two outs in the top of the fourth, but both teams quickly returned to the field and looked to take over where they left off. No team hit a run again until the bottom of the 6th inning when sophomore Jayden Kelly (Tyngsboro, MA) ran to homebase after a single from sophomore Morgan Keefe (Dracut, MA) would turn into an extended play with an error on the Lasell right fielder. Soon after, Keefe would return home after a batting hit from sophomore Bailey Tammaro (Fitchburg, MA) that recorded another error for the Lasers. Lasell would look to mount a comeback in the top of the seventh but Worcester would hold them off claiming the 4-0 win.

Senior Emily Bartlett (Lowell, MA) would go the complete game recording just four hits with 11 strikeouts in her shutout win.

In game two action, first year Peyton Maloney (West Boylston, MA) would nab the start and quickly shutdown the Lasell attack. While the Lasers would again have expert pitching, Worcester was able to lead the bases and squeeze a run out of the first, as Kelly would hit into the sacrifice that would send Lapoint home. The teams would each remain scoreless through the next  3.5 innings when Bartlett would nail a hit down the right field line, and with an error on the right fielder what was a simple single turned into a three base gain for Bartlett and three runs coming home off of Lanpher, Lapoint and sophomore Amanda Amdamuska (Dudley, MA).

The Lasers would attempt to respond in the top of the sixth but Maloney and the defense worked their pitches to keep them scoreless after snagging a line drive at second and grabbing the out on the runner on first. Lasell would return the favor in the bottom of the sixth grabbing their second and third to keep Worcester from extending their lead as Lasell moved to the top of seventh to attempt to extend the game.

Lasell would manage to force one run across the plate before Maloney and junior Morgan Keefe (Dracut, MA) would close out the game and the 4-1 victory.

Maloney would end the complete game appearance with just six hits and four strikeouts on the outing.
