Golden Bear Volleyball Sweeps Worcester State on the Road, 3-0

WORCESTER, Mass. (September 22, 2022) – The Western New England women's volleyball team traveled to Worcester State University, where they defeated the Lancers in a quick 3-0 match.

Records:

  • Western New England: 10-4
  • Worcester State University: 1-11

How It Happened:

The Golden Bears went for three straight to open up set one. Worcester tied it up before the scoring was back and forth. WNE earned another three in a row to take an 8-5 lead. The Lancers fought to tie it up at 10-10 and set one continued to be a tight match up. The Lancers would take the lead, the Golden Bears would tie it up and take the lead back. The Golden Bears gathered a late two-point lead after the Lancers evened it at 17-17. A kill from Sarah Scott and one from Rachel Critz to follow. Worcester scored to put it within one, but a couple of their errors gave WNE back a two-point lead. The score 21-19, WNE in the lead. The Golden Bears ended set one with four consecutive points, the last one a service ace from Scott.

Western New England completely dominated set two. It was a set of runs for the Golden Bears. the set started with both teams scoring after errors. Then WNE had a 4-1 advantage then forced a 10-4 advantage. The Lancers put two kills down before WNE had a series of seven that depleted Worcester. The score was 19-6. The Lancers could only put down nine points in the set. WNE gained 11 kills in set two to five from the Lancers. The Golden Bears were hitting at .556 during this set and with match point closed it out 25-9.

Worcester got after it first in set three. The two teams exchanged points until an error, two kills and a service ace put the Golden Bears ahead 6-4. Worcester had to fight from being behind the entire set. They got a kill, then WNE would have another series of three. The Golden Bears had only a three- or four-point lead until another four in a row, two of them aces from Zoe Bozzay. They were now ahead 19-12. The Lancers battled out the end of the set, but it was too late to stop the Golden Bears from hitting 25 and winning the game, 3-0.

Inside the Numbers:

  • The Golden Bears ended the match with 27 kills, 24 assists, 40 digs, and two blocks while hitting .207 percent.
  • The Lancers ended the match with 26 kills, 26 assists, 40 digs, and three blocks, while hitting .051 percent
  • Sarah Scott and Yemayma Molina led Western New England in kills, both with seven. Scott added with 10 digs, two service aces, one block, and one assist
